How effective is your pain relief?

I was wondering what you all thought on this subject. I have been having trouble and have tramadol, morphine and amitriptyline as well as other assorted meds, but am still not pain free. I find even if the meds work on one joint I suddenly become aware how much another joint hurts. Do others find this? I know that I will have pain and do tend to just live with quite a lot, but wondered what others experiences were?

Hi Deb
The best time for me is a few days after the injections, just a shame they don't last for ever.

Hi
I initially joined the site to find out how much other people can control their pain. I take tramadol and pregabalin as well as steroids and methotrexate. I am never out of pain but the tramadol makes the pain tolerable. if for any reason I cant take it (I sometimes get sick with migraines and cant keep the tablets down) I am not able to do anything as the pain is too bad. So as the other say it certainly takes the edge off and makes it tolerable but I am never without a significant amount of pain.

i was told by my gp that they can only help to manage the pain & that i'd never be pain free.
i take cocodomol 30/500 ibuprofen 400,50 ml amptripyline,20mg zomorph & oramorph for break through pain.Well im taking the max on everything & same as you lot it only just takes the edge off the pain.
ive just had a hot bath, waiting for o/h to rub deep heat into my back as that helps a bit.so no real answers to pain from me. its just seems to me that you get use to it all & have to adapt accordingly.i have high hopes that the pain clinic can help, but ive been told that its pain management(same as gp said)manage the pain. debsx0 -
Hi Deb,
I am never free of pain but as long as I have been sensible its under control. I take pregabalin, diclo's and tranadol and have had the temp nerve blocks in my neck which really did help though the ordinary steroid in my lumber didn't do much once the local had worn off. I hope your neck clams down as it settles and it gets easier for you. Luv Cris x0 -

Thanks all, very interesting to read your replies. I find my pain relief only takes the edge off as well. We all seem to be on a combination of meds as well, so I suppose for everyone needs a different cocktail. Make mine a margerita!!!!!
Lets hope they make advances in pain meds soon!!!
Heres to pain free days!!

Hi Deb, Being new to OA,diagnosed in Dec. I've been on 500/15 co- codamol, 500/30 co-codamol and Tramadol but none of those really helped much with the pain. For the past three weeks I've been on steroids,8 a day for the first week,6 a day the second week and now 4 a day, changing to 2 a day from this Fri.It really has helped with the pain,in fact,I have been almost pain free since I started taking them.
They have also given me a lot of energy which has been great after months of hardly any sleep.I know it's only a temporary measure as I don't think you can stay on them for long peroids of time.I also take naproxen and a stomach protector and that has helped with the inflamation and swelling in the hands and feet.I have my first appointment with the rheumy next week and I guess he will change the meds so all the pain will probably return.

Hi Deb
Have never been on tramadol. I have morphine and although the Chronic Pain Clinic said they were not helping me that much, after I had come off them, I think I can say they did help me. It did makeme relax more. I hated amitriptyline and also another one Clonazepam which was prescribed to stop the shooting pains I was getting.
I think you need to keep seeing your Rheumy Consultant or GP until you get something which suits you as I am doing.
