DLA/Motobility

I get the full DLA motobilitygrant and perhaps the lowest rate for care which is now £19. pr week. I think this will change because of the amount of personal care my OH has to do for me. Hands and arms very bad again with another flare up, kept me awake all night. Need help dressing aswell. I keep wondering where I am going to end up sometimes. Mustn't moan, just had a bad night.
We are seriously thinking of changing the largest bit for a motobility car. Has anyone else done this.
I am due for my first re-assessment next year and it looks like I shall have to go to automatic and power stearing. If anyone has changed their DLA to a vehicle, I would love to know.

Hi Joyful
I looked into this when I could drive but decided value to buy a 2nd hand car. For a car I could get in and out of easily I would have had to put down thousands of pounds deposit and my DLA. Wasn't that keen on owning a new car either

I did wonder about the re-assess thing, especially as you get older.
I have a feeling that once you are 65 it changes.
Having worked in Care Management, you would think I would know, but then again, with this Government you dn't know where you are. The criteria for the elderly/disablement changes from year to year.
Does DLA change to AA. Perhaps that is a subject for the Chat line.

Hi Joyful
I have had a car with my DLA for the last 12 years its the best thing I ever did no worries about breaking down or money to find for servicing. If you go onto Motability uk websight you can look at all the deposits some cars have a nil deposit if you need help motability give grants for the deposit.
I have just chosen my new car for September.
Not sure what happens when you reach 65 sorry
Motability are very helpful and I am sure they would not leave you without a car you can always buy your last car off them as well
Hope this helps

Hello - As I understand it if you have a car before you are 65 it carries on afterwards.
I have a car too, what a good thing that is. We never have to worry about it (other than putting petrol in it).
At the moment I am re-newing my DLA and changing my car (new one due in August) if you ring Motability and tell them they are so helpful - they said if DLA takes a while (at the moment they are saying 12 weeks) I can hang on to my present car until it comes through. You can have a 6 month overlap. So another vote for the car here.0 -
I don't know about the 65 age thing, but I do know if you can no longer drive the car is taken away. Sounds obvious, but my neice had one which was suitable for her husband to drive her around in, but when she could no longer drive herself the car went back.
Luckily it didn't make any difference to them, as they had another car, but it could do to some people. I don't know if its possible to make a case on those lines. She also had no choice of car, I find the small, low type hard to get in and especially out of but, my Land Rover is easy and very comfrotable. Also safer on the country lanes we live on! Its more Tractor than Chelsea :!:  Love Sue0 -
Hi If you go to
Motability.co.uk
you can search all the available cars I have never been told what I have to have its always been my choice I also have a friend who can no longer drive and no one has tryed to take her car off her her husband drives her around in it in fact she has just had a new car.

Hi, Sorry, maybe I misunderstood what happened to my niece and her car. Its possible it was her choice to let it go and increase her money as she does have taxis to take her about. That would make more sense than 2 cars and 1 driver. I really hope that my mistake hasn't stopped anyone from applying, as I know the scheme worked well for my neice when she could drive. After all a car is one of the most expensive things most of us have to buy.   Sue0

From what you say above, this is OK. the Terms and Conditions cover it:
Your guide to getting a Motability car
Page 2. You don’t even have to be able to drive yourself as you can nominate up to two other drivers
Page 9. The car must only be driven by the permitted drivers on the Certificate of Motor Insurance.
The car should be primarily used for the benefit of the disabled customer, but the disabled person does not have to be in the car at all times.

The DLA Mobility Component is currently at £2,553 per year, all of this is transferred to Motability, then they supply a fully insured car. Saves a lot of hassle. However, for more info. check the Handbook above.
If you want to run your own car and the costs, less the cost of fuel, are below the £2,553 per year threshold then go for that option. It's your choice.

Thanks everyone for your contribution, it has helped a lot. I think my re-assessment for DLA is in 2011 so some way to go. As my poor little 2CV looks rather poorly at the moment, I think a mobility car is the way to go. I already get free Road Fund Licence so might aswell get insurance etc. free too. Every bit helps when you are only on a pension.
Let you know what happens

I noticed on the Motability website that they are giving away a free Rough Guide to Accessible Britain if you are a Blue Badge holder.
Limited availability though.

Hi,
I am about to pick up my 5th motability car , no worries , plenty of cars to choose from , also I cannot drive but have nominatted my husband as driver and I could have another named driver --- if you receive dla before 65 it continues after that age , it is AA if you are aged 65 or over on application , that is how it stands at present but we all know that GOVERMENTS of all colours and creeds think we are all on the fiddle and are shirking our responsabilities and must be sent down the salt mines for our sins !!!!!Oh how I wish they could live my life for a week -- I am sure things would change , because all we ask is fairness.
