knee injection question

Hi All,
On Tuesday I went to see Consultant and discussed my knee pain and falling due to it giving way. The Dr said knees give way when they hurt and to stop it you inject local anaesthetic (long lasting) to "re-set" pain signals and allow muscles to be built up again. So he injected it there and then! It was not nice and I've got a fantastic bruise from the needle (which seemed to be about 2 inches wide). Anyway Thursday I woke up and my knee was stiff, today it's sore and I've got pain at the top of my knecap and the back of my knee. The Dr said the only thing I'll notice is loss of feeling inside my knee so I'm a bit worried - anyone had this done?

    Hi kt

I had my knee injected about a month ago for the second time.

I had fluid taken off first and then steroid and local anaesthetic put in after. I didn't find it particularly painful, but then I suppose I was comparing it to the everyday pain in my very damaged knee. I didn't have a bruise after on either occasion, but then this time I didn't really get a response either, sadly. :(

I have had lots of joints injected though and I know from experience that sometimes it hurts more for a few days after injection, before it settles down and improves.

    Hope this happens for you.

Hello, I've had steriod injections in both wrists. A bit sore to have done and afterwards for a week or so, the wrists hurt more. The Rheummy told me this may happen as a reaction to the steriods, but then it went off and I had very little pain for a couple or so weeks. Could yours be similar? Love Sue

    Hi KT,

I've had my knees injected in the past with local anaesthetic and steroids and I always felt the benefits almost immediately.

I did have a steroid injection into my elbow yesterday and was told that I may not feel the benefit for 7 to 10 days. Maybe you need to give it a couple of days to work but if you're still dissatisfied after a week I should give your Rheumy a ring and see what he says.

    Hi,
Thanks for your messages. After I posted my knee got really itchy and was swollen. I went to my GP worried about an infection and he said he thinks it's a reaction tot he injection... Called the Rheum Nurse and she agreed - I just have to put up with it for another 3 months (or until they call me back for my 3 month appt) with my knee worse than it was before they injected it! Not v happy...

Brave you, looking at the needle when you had your knee injected. I am ok if I do not look and I ask them for no running commentary either, just get it over with!!

I would not put up with more discomfort than you already had before the injection, for three months if that is going to be the case. It is early days yet at least you have been advised that you have had a reaction to the injection. Hopefully this will subside in a few days. If not, I would keep on at them and at least get a much earlier appointment than three months.

    Good luck,

    Elna
