Hi
I have been having a fairly good week since starting the new medication. I dont think it has quite settled into my system yet so am not going to moan about it just yet!!!
Basically since starting the new medication I have come up in huge mouth ulcers, I tend to suffer from them when I am stressed or run down but these are monster bu99ers!
I have tried Bonjela and salt but nothing working.
any ideas? also do you think the medication may have something to do with it?
(I have been changed to Celebrex the last week. I checked the side effects section on the packet but nothing mentions mouth ulcers.)

Hi
try vinegar, it stings like mad but works quite well.
i know some meds can give you mouth ulcers if its you meds you will need to speak to your doc as i guess they will keep coming, or as your body gets used to the meds may be they will stop.
best to ask in anycase.0 -
Hi bailey I get the dam things I find bonjela just hurts and salt well low earth orbit here I come!, the best thing I have ever found for it is corsodyl, you get it at the chemist it was recommended to me by my sister who also suffers with them as I do, just don’t use it neat dilute it as they direct you to, it takes around a day or two to work.0

Hi Bailey,
I also get bad mouth ulcers. For the little ones i find corsodyl is ok, but for the big boys i use Iglu gel. This kills the pain as well as curing them.
One thing I have noticed is that every time I get a bout of them, a couple of days later I have a flare up. So I treat them as a warning and try to look after myself a little better for a few days. Maybe the change over of medication caused stress and this has led to an outbreak of ulcers??????
Let me know how you get on please.

I also get mouth ulcers before a flare, I gargle with oraldene mouthwash and luke warm water with a 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
When they have been really bad I have spoken to my GP and he can often provide something that will help.
I found that I was plagued with mouth ulcers before having RA , I have no problems with my teeth so I assume I am more prone to mouth ulcers and maybe bouts of them are more regular if I am run down.
I personlly do not think that my meds are associated with the mouth ulcers that I get.0 -
Hi
Thanks for all the fab information.
I have noticed that before a flare up I tend to get them, I have woken up today with a lot of pain and stiffness in my hips so will use them as a warning sign from now on.
I can handle the small ones but when they are huge and you have 4 or five in one ara that join up and make one huge mammoth one I can barely eat or talk because it effects my whole jaw.
I am off to get some Corsodyl and Iglu stuff.
Thanks for your advice everyone!0 -
Hi bailey
Mouth ulcers and thrush are quite common among arthritis sufferers. The best thing i have found was recomended by the Rheumy nurse
NYSTAN comes ready mixed and you use the eyedrop suplied to but into mouth normally works in 2 3 days

Hi
I went up the Drs this morning and showed him my mouth ulcers and also told him how I have been waking up in the night with heavy sweating. he explained that mouth ulcers and night sweats are a common sign that you are about to have a flare up. He also took my temeperature and it was high.
I learn something new everyday!
He have me some paste to put on them and has given me a course of steroids to take to hopefully prevent the flare up.0 -
Hi,
I have OA, and am also prone to mouth ulcers, often with swollen glands and a general run-down feeling to go with them.
About 3 years ago I read an article that said that re-occurring mouth ulcers can be due to the body having trouble repairing small damage due to some sort of in-born deficiency in the membrane of the mouth. (It sort of makes sense to me that this could connect with OA which is also partly about problems with healing tissues).
The article said that if this is the cause of your mouth ulcers, you should use tootpaste that doesn't contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) as this can exacerbate the problem with the membrane in the mouth in succeptible people. I have been using this sort of toothpaste for thre past few years and have noticed a drastic reduction in the number of ulcers I get - and they tend to only come singly and to heal more quickly too, so it's definitely worth a try.
(It can be hard to find toothpast without it - try a health food shop, or most varieties of Sensodyne.)
Hope this helps - if only OA could be got rid of so easily!

Hi, I haven't posted for a while but mouth ulcers were the first things I was concerned and posted about! Mine seemed to start in earnest after adding sulfa to my methotrexate and other drugs etc. I had to lower my dose of Sulfa for a while and then build it up again and this seemed to work for a while but I had a really sore mouth a couple of weeks ago and have got a huge cluster of mouth ulcers appearing over last couple of days! I do feel quite rough at the moment though and have been a bit achey and hot (did think I was going to begin to oink soon!!!) so could be a flare up starting. My dentist suggested Difflam and also Adcortyl which is a paste both things have been ok but sometimes good old Bonjela is just as good! Think I may be tempted to try the Iglu stuff though if things get worse!!0

Hi
Tried the paste I got from the Drs yesterday and miraculously it has disappeared. I can still feel it there but it feels like just a bit of rough skin inside now instead of a nasty ulcer taking over my mouth.
I have had a terrible back and hips today and last night. My Dr gave me Prednisalone for 10 days as he said it was a classic sign of a flare up and they were to prevent it. I am having a flare up at the moment but not as bad as they usually are which I guess I can't grumble about.
I think it is all about knowing your own body and what signs to look out for.0 -

Hi Bailey,
Glad to hear the stuff the Dr gave you worked - it's really interesting to read about symptoms that might predict a flare - I don't think I've had one since the initial stuff happened late last year (the MTX, prednisolone, declofenic mix seems to be working for me!!) so it's really useful for me to collect others experiences for when the time for me to have another flare finally comes...I'm sure it's probably on the way so thanks for posting.
