Repeat prescriptions - enough for a month?

Hello to eveyone,

I'm new to this site (and arthritis) and have a query that I wondered if anyone could answer. I've been prescripted co-codomal (8mg) by my rhemutoloy doc who's lovely to take 1 or 2 4 times a day as required. When I asked for a repeat perscription for them my gp (who's an awkward bu**er) only gives me 100. This means that if I take the 8 a day then they only last just under 2 weeks. Is this normal. I always thought a repeat prescription should last a month.

I have a pre-paid nhs thingy so it doesn't cost me anymore but it's annoying having to go to the doctors every other week to pick them up as some times I just don't feel like driving if my arthritis is hurting.

Thanks

Julie

    HI
You have to be brave and tell them that you need a month's supply  I know I am scared of the receptionists too, but with mobility issues the very last thing you need is to go there every two weeks!
    You gotta do it
Thank you so much for reminding me my pre-pay runs out TODAY!"!! Will get it done now!

Flipping heck that was quick!! I'll do as you say. If you don't see any more posts from me you'll know I haven't survived the doctor's receptionists from hell!!

    Thanks

    Hi Julie

You may find the receptionist does not have authority to change a gp script. You will have to bite the bullet and ask "himself." That is a cheek to only give you two weeks supply.

He may have done that initially to see if they work for you. If they do, tell him and that you are taking the meximum allowed per day and require one months supply.

    All the best

    Luv

Hi Julie I had the same trouble getting my meds I was having to ask for them every 10 days i have now changed the doctor as mine retired and when i said about it she sorted it out . It seems it is because of them being strong they dont like you having to many, perhaps they think we will take to many of them or we cant count . It drives me mad always having to see the doctors because they wont put them on repeat. At least when you get a months supply you dont have to always be there fighting with the receptionist. hope you sort it out .....alicea
PS Just read the next post , sorry i hadnt realized your tablets are'nt strong so as they said you should'nt have this trouble . Mine are not over the counter meds that must be why i have trouble . well hope you sort it .

There shouldn't be a problem getting a months supply. You say you are on 8/500 co-codamol and these are available over the counter!!! Good to know if you get desperate. The receptionist should be able to put in a request for the GP to amend your script but in all likely hood you'll have to wait a day or 2 for it. But once you've done it once it should be on your repeat for next time. These are not strong painkillers so there shouldn't be a problem. Just don't confuse them with the other strength co-codamol that are prescription only.

    Hello Julie,
It's because the prescription has 'as required' on it. When it has this on the prescription, they assume you're not taking them regularly. This happened to me with my co-dydramol. I was getting 56 for a month but I was taking 4 day and the prescription only lasted me 14 days. I got a phone appointment for my Dr and when I explained that I was taking 4 a day, every day, she then prescribed me 112! You'll have to get in touch with your dr and explain the situation-sorry. Try and get him/her to prescribe tabs as '2 to be taken 4 to 6 hourly'' and then you'll get the right amount.

I agree with all of the above, just wanted to suggest you use a chemist that will pick up and deliver your prescription to your home for those times when you just can't manage to go to the doctors.

Hi, I take tramadol and I have the same issue with them, but when I saw the GP, she asked how many I took and ammended the prescription. The only thing is I have a draw full of medication! We (my husband and me) seem to be at the chemist every few days, as hes a diabetic and has IBS, so we keep them on their toes! I was lucky, I didn't have to ask the receptionist!
Hope you can get sorted. Love Sue :)
