Hi
I have had RA 11yrs now been on different meds over the years, at the moment I am on methotrexate and Humira injections. Although I am now finding that the humira is wearing off within 4 days and feeling in pain and incredibly tired all the time, but that’s not the problem really, just needed to tell someone, how I feel.
Any way My partner and the children would love to move, we have an opportunity to move from London to Cornwall, but I am really worried about any sought of move because it took me along painful time to get to a see rheumatologist clinic and to be considered for treatment and for the who ever says yes about the cost. Does anyone know if my treatment would be cancelled when moving area? and whether I would have to go through the whole process again with a new hospital?. Also I receive DVLA what happens to that If I move, do hospitals in Cornwall pay out for treatment like Humira? I am really worried about this and I don’t know if I can go any where, I feel like my illness has become a chain.
Sorry for all questions, but help would be appreciated
Thanks

Hi,
Nice to 'meet' you firstly. Second I am in Cornwall, and though Treliske comes bottom of the tables all the time it has the most incredibly good Rumo dept! Some of the other depts, well they ain't so good but all the Rumo's are wonderful, incredibly helpful and well nice!
I will pm you the phone number and maybe you could ring them and ask about the Hurmia question. The one thing Treliske is its incredibly badly funded and seems to be quite bad at expensive treatments.
I can't help you about the DLA thing but I should imagine its just transferred. Oh I am local but Treliske was re-named the Royal Cornwall sometime ago! Its the only Hospital the others are satellites to it and it has come bottom of the tables for the last 4 years, which is actually down to how the trust run and finance things! :? The staff are lovely but there are just not enough of em!
As to doctors, there are good and bad but depending on where you were planing to move would depend on what kind of doctors are available. I could never recommend mine I am afraid.
Hope some of this helps?
Take care, Cris
Hey I just thought, depending on where you live you may come under Derriford....... I don't know much about that cus I only been there once. Its a Devon one but still treatment is funded by the Cornwall trust........ :roll:0 -
I lived in Cornwall till 3 yrs ago. In fact my RA was diognosed there. The hospital at Truro (Royal Cornwall) has an excellent Rheumy department.
When I moved to Devon I wrote a letter of thanks to Royal Cornwall Hospital (creep) and told them where my new hospital was, Royal Devon and Exeter. I contacted the new hospital myself as well as going to new GP. The changeover was fine with very little delay in appointment for new place. I cannot coment on funding for various drugs but I was on mtx.
I am sure you will like living in Cornwall if you enjoy a quieter pace of life and beautiful surroundings - also found the schools to be good.
Good luck

Thanks for replies, its good to know things might go smoothly, When I was first diagnosed I went along time in pain, because my blood test kept coming back normal, I used to wish at the time that when I went to sleep that I would not wake up again. I did not now what was wrong with me until I went to a second hospital and they told me it was RA and results had come back positive, when I started receiving treatment I got my life back again, just with the odd set back now again. How people being turned down for treatment can cope, I don’t now, its always been at the back of my mind if something happens to my RA Consultant and someone new starts and wants to change things
Mtx is good but alone it does not cover enough for me to live properly as all my joints suffer.
Penzance is where we hope to move
Thanks for the info0 -
Hi,
Penzance was my nearest town as a kid! Nice place as well. You'd come under West Cornwall Hospital there, but its still a satellite of Treliske and so it will be the same Rumo's and they are all so good and would bend over backwards to keep you as comfy as you are.
I hope you can decide what you wan to do and then that it all works out well for you all, Cris x0 -
Hi,
I live in Bude, we love the unspoilt North East of the county miles from anywhere but we have all we need here. I was diagnosed with sero+RA here and have received fantastic treatment from my Rheumy at Derriford, Plymouth. My bloods are done locally, at my GP's and my Rheumy visits once a month to my local Hostpital at Stratton. I was put on mtx within two weeks of diagnosis. I am now on 25mg Mtx self injected and Sulfasalazine, just been assesed for anti TNF just trying to decide which one to go for. No problem with funding and your DLA will continue just tell them your new address etc. And with your blue badge you can also apply for a pass for the toll bridge and ferry at Plymouth
Cornwall is a fantastic place to live very laid back lifestyle and the kids love it, we moved here from Sussex four years ago.
Good luck with your move.
Best wishes

Hiya
Firstly, welcome!
With regard to moving, I've recently moved back to my home area after a few years away. It was the best thing I coud do.
As other people have said, the DLA will not be a problem if you keep them up to date with your contact details.
The one thing I would recommend is that if you move, make sure you have a letter from your current consultant to your new consultant stating your condition and treatments, latest test results etc etc. They will get your notes eventually but I've found its a lot easier if you turn up with something in writing. I've had RA for 11yrs too and its a long story if you have to start from square one!!
Good luck with everything. Cornwall is beautiful, I've just come back from having a short break there last week. We got rained on a lot!0
