Hello there...
just stumbled upon this forum recently and it's really good to know that there are other people out there going through similar problems to me. i've recently encountered 2 flare up's a month apart - had my knee respirated 4 times in all and had 3 injections, 2 in my knee and one in my wrist. the swelling in my wrist was the worst pain i have ever experienced - thank $£&! for morphine! all this is unusual as i've not had any problems for some 7-8 years in terms of swelling and i pretty much forgot about the problems i used to have.
I first encountered swelling of the joints and the word arthritis when i was a healthy 17yr male (i'm now 32) on route to art college when out of the blue my ankles swelled up. from then on over the next few years it moved around my knees and elbows. i was in and out of RA unit at the western in Edinburgh getting my joints drained and injected along with a supply of sulfasalazine it all seemed to keep it at bay. it would allow me to be active again within a few months even though i new my flexibility within the joints was never as good. it has never stopped me doing stuff (suppose i never really want to accept that i have some sort of arthritis) but would say it has stopped me pushing myself in sport especially snowboarding.
i'm back on the sulfasalazine now so hopefully things will calm down.
does anyone know if you can get RA in the back of the lower skull/top of neck?
thanks for reading!

Hi,
I have RA pretty much all down my right side and do experience pain at base of skull, feels deep in too. When I mentioned it to a registrar, she said it was muscular (didnt listen to what I was describing). I know my own body!!
Hope you get on ok

Hi, welcome to the site. You can get Ra in the neck, it does need urgent assessment by your rheumy. You should get it checked out immediately. They are extremely pro active in treating RA in the neck. Let us know how you get on.
Take care

thanks for all the welcomes!
lol @pixyandfaries my kind of humor too he he..
well my neck has eased a little but the swelling in my knee has come straight back in less than a week. suppose it doesn't help living on third floor flat! waiting on a support for my right wrist which'll hopefully help me get by till that dies down a little.
probably a stupid question and must get asked millions of times but is there anything i can do to help reduce the swelling other than Diclofenac, respiration, cut off leg?
cheers

Hi, Nice to meet you!! Glad you've found the site. It should carry a health warning though, as its VERY addictive!

TBH only just back on the Sulph so I'm sure i'll have to see how this goes - not convinced.
My girlfriend has suggested some natural stuff for long term controlling for the RH which i'll need to see if any of you guys have tried. Can't remember what it is called. Usually the steroids for me keeps the swelling at bay but this time it's only lasted a week and a month before that. There's no way of hospital draining and giving me another injection but I can feel the swelling is only going to get worse rather than what i would want which is to deflate and eff off - excuse the french 8) .0 -
Maybe you should pop to the docs and get your kne checked out? Would ice bring the swelling down and resting it raised? I expect you are probably doing all that anyway. Ra is a pain!!
Hope the sulp starts to work soon.

Hey lyinglow
Welcome to the site. I'm sure someone on the site will be able to help you. I have OA not RA so won't be able to help much.
Flare ups seem to affect RA and OA sufferers so I understand your pain. I find resting and keeping my joints warm helps.

thanks again for the welcomes
well my knee is kind of almost solid to touch with the amount of fluid in there. I had a really high count - can't remember the abbreviation or the term - something CP? last time round and it feels the same way this time..
managed to get GP appointment this afternoon - not sure what they can do but need to do something.
does anyone know if i can keep getting my knee drained on a regular basis? can't imagine this would be very good for it but good releif for me! there is obviously the underlying issue of why i have this mass of fluid continually heading there.
it's an unusual experience all this discussing 'problems with my body' normally i'm post things about cars and suchlike0 -
Hi LL and welcome from me,
Have you tried ice packs on your knee? These can be very good at reducing the swelling. A bag of frozen peas will do so long as you put a damp cloth on your knee first and the peas on top. Leave on for 20 minutes, remove, and then gently exercise without weightbearing and this could help disperse the fluid, especially if you do it regularly. Heat packs can also help but, personally, I don't find heat as effective, heat for me is more of a comfort.
You may need to rest your knee a bit too, try not to overdo it, but rest and exercise go hand in hand with arthritis.
Hope this helps.

What cars lyinglow?
Maybe you can combine the two?!
The ice is certainly worth a try!
What other meds did you say you are on?
Was it your CRP up?

Hi Toni. I have a subaru impreza so that keeps me busy! 8) Although getting in and out has been an issue of late! I used to have a race prepped landrover defender a few years back which was horrendous when i had a flare up - they have a real heavy clutch!
you into motorsport Toni? and yes that's it - CRP!
now on tramadol, declofanic, sulph and a few other supplement types. girlfriend got me gluco and MSM complex which has antiflam in it - anyone tried this?
had the ice on last night at 20min intervals which does help a little.
had a funny experience at the docs yesterday as the gp said she would resperate my knee and give me some 'mechanical joint relief'. i said ok alright. wasn't to sure about her doing it as every medical person that has done this procedure has never matched up to the docs at A+E. but she tried and failed. bit worried about all these needles going in, it can't be good.
cheers

Hi LL,
When do you next see your rumo? I don't know about modern times but back along I had fluid taken off my knees very regally. Ideas change but they would only do it if it were safe eh? I hope it will quieten down and ease up for you soon.
In recent years I have to agree with you there is no such thing as a comfy car!If the getting in and out don't get you the steering, clutch or accelerator will! :?
I hope you will soon find they do something for your knee and they do it soon. Take care Cris0 -
