"Cures" for Arthritis

I thought I would start a list of so-called cures people come up with whenever you tell them you have arthritis. The ones I can think of are:

- A teaspoon of tumeric powder in a glass of water (I actually tried this - repeated on me for DAYS and it was disgusting)

- Copper bracelet - does this work for anybody out there?

- Vinegar mixed with honey in a glass of warm milk (didn't try this one)

- Cod liver oil (my mum still thinks I should try this to cure me)

- Wearing sensible shoes (yes, another "mum" cure)

- Oh, and the obvious one - just stay upbeat and don't think of the pain, it will soon go away! WHY didn't we think of this before?!

So what has everyone else been recommended?

Cider vinegar - 1 eggcup full every morning. Why an eggcup?

Give up coffee - tried this for about 2 months - no difference.
No potatoes or foods from the nightshade family.
No citrus fruits or tomatoes. Was going to give these up but the doc told me any benefits far outweigh the non proven disadvantages.

I must admit my dad used to say don't go out wearing wet jeans or with wet hair cos I would end up with a bad back and neck.
Magnetic bracelet - tried it to no avail. Copper bracelet tried that too.
We live in hope don't we.

    Hi Linda

Agree about going out with damp clothes. Wonder if that started mine off.
When I see the bare mid rifs and even bare bums now (saw a lad with jeans that just came up to UNDER his little bum and a bare bum showing. Thought they might be falling off. Anyway, all the bare shoulders, bare tums etc. I must sound like my mum. "The rue the day......... etc. etc."

Same thing about very high heels.

The turmeric thing does works, for me, as does the Rose Hip Capsules. I'm sure there is an improvement or am I just getting my medication sorted?

Vitmen D - Fish oil is suppose to be good for you. I eat loads of fish and Omega 3 capsules.

Copper bracelets, never tried it because I was told it was just a making money gimmic. A friend of our swears by it.

My nan use to have a small bit of Epsom Salts in water every morning. I think she and all her sisters (5 of them) all did the same and it helped them.

I've increased my cups of coffee a day. Thought it might send my blood pressure up, but hasn't. In fact I think I feel better for it.

I have been so busy the last week or two, and have worked through the pain, but had to take extra painkillers and tramadols to get by on. Haven't forgotten the pain. There was one stage I couldn't put one leg in front of the other and my knee is seizing up all the time now.

I've heard about fruit from the nightshade family. Doesn't that include tomatoes. Don't eat green potatoes. Had a step aunt who cut out tomatoes and it helped with the pain level she had, and she was very very bad. I haven't felt any difference myself.

Oh gosh you could go on and on couldn't you?

    All the best
    joy

Actually they might be onto something there although not an actual cure! Apparently when excited we produce something called endorphins which help with the pain. My hubbys line is you want me to increase your endorphins!! ooh the romance

Took all the usual omega3, Cod Liver Oil and Vit C supplements for years. They did absolutely nothing to protect my joints.

The only thing that has worked for me is a glass of Pineapple juice with lunch and evening meal.

My old granny (who had RA too) swore by 'butter balls' A lump of butter rolled in sugar and sooked  . YUK YUK YUK!!! She thought her RA would have been a lot worst if she didn't have her daily fix of 'butter balls'. According to her they were also good for sore throats, coughs. colds and flu
Just to confirm I will NOT be rolling lumps of butter in sugar to fight the threat of swine flu YUK YUK YUK :lol::lol:

    Hi Ninakang

A colleague who works with my hubby said that his mother is off her medication because she found taking vinegar and molasses has cured her. He didn't tell me where or what kind of arthritis she has.
I said what about my knees that need replacing will molasses suddenly mend them? Anyway I've promsied to give it a try and if I'm suddenly skipping; jumping hopping and disco dancing I'll let you know!

I tried manuka honey balm (it was enormously expensive and after a month did nothing). What a load of tosh.

I also tried a copper bracelet but that was useless too.

    :lol::lol:

    Sharmaine
PS I'll still take my medication because I don't believe this will ease my pain at all!! If anyone knows any different then let me know.

Holidays with my grandmother were a nightmare, Cod liver oil cured everything! I was a healthy young girl but she wanted to make sure I remaned so! Neat cod liver oil was disgusting - she gave up on me as I just spat it out everytime. So she tried brewing up some evil looking herbs and I refused that too. She was a lovely old dear and would NEVER buy vegetables. or bread. She grew her own until she couldn't because of her arthritic hands. I don't think the cod liver oil helped her either. She once told me of a recipe that she tried to ease her arthritic limbs -it was a rub of garlic and vinegar - it smelt disgusting. My grandfather told her to throw it away otherwise he was moving out.

    Hi

My next door neighbour told me I should go for a run. My husband had to go inside - we laughed for days. It's ignorance - honestly. This man sees me limping to my car and my left leg is totally bent and he tells me to go for a run!:lol:

    Hi Pixy

Laughed my head off at that!!! If only I could run ... now that would be amazing. If you didn't want sex you could rub yourself down with vinegar and garlic!!!!:lol::lol:

You are incredibly cheeky but I like it!!!

I'll have to tell my hubby that one.

    Sharmaine

quote="pixyandfaries"]and after ya run you can have sex with hubby !!!:lol::lol:[/quote]

According to John C. Wolf, D.O., Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Family Medicine News (1998 archives), "In the case of WD-40, a great myth developed about its benefits in treating arthritis. It is easy to follow the flawed logic: WD-40 works wonders on stiff door locks, squeaky hinges, and rusted bolts. Therefore, it should make my stiff, sore, squeaking arthritic joints work better. Unfortunately, like all myths, this one isn't true."

A look at the WD-40 MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) shows that the product contains petroleum distillates. Skin contact may cause drying of skin and/or irritation.
