Had my hip replaced two years ago and it is GREAT no pain and plenty of movement, then last year had a new knee opposite leg to hip and I am still in a lot of discomfort , swelling, pain and stiffness I am still on a stick as I tend to trip and for security I try and go out as much as I can shopping etc but find it very tiring I do take quite a lot of medication throughout the day I am due to see consultant later in the year talk of having my other hip done but with the knee being as it is I am not prepared to go through the op again. It's a case of damned if I do and damned if I don't any comments would be appreciated

    Hello
I have no experience of joint replacement surgery, but someone with experience will be along soon. I would like to say how sorry I am that you have so much pain and I can understand you feelings, regarding further surgery. When you see the consultant can you talk it over with him and get more information? If may help to go with an open mind, I know thats hard but if you don't go you may lose an opportunity. I hope you find the answer thats right for you and not be pushed into something you don't want. Love sue

    Hello Wendygrocott.
I'm so sorry that you are in a lot of pain.
i had a thr in 1996 and i had a tkr in 2003 the opp leg and i have not had a problem with them.
i did a lot of exersizes with them and i walked the dog i'm having more pain in my back from a disc pressing on a nerve than i did with both of them good luck with what you decide to do.

    Hi
Before I had my THR I had terrible referred pain in my knee. Sometimes I felt the knee pain was worse than the hip pain. But I have no knee pain post op. I just wondered if you were still having discomfort in your operated knee due to referred pain from your hip that needs replacing? Just a thought?
Are you due to see your surgeon? You could discuss whether your continued pain is related to your hip problem.
    Good luck

    Hi Wendy,

I think NB has made a good point especially as your surgeon is looking at doing the other hip above you TKR.

I had my knees replaced at the same time 9 years ago and have had pain in them afterwards. This is because I'm a rheumatoid and although they take away the diseased bone I still have trouble from the soft tissue around my TKRs but my knees have always been my weak spot. I would like to say though that the discomfort I have in my knees is nothing compared to the bone on bone pain before the operation - I can live with this and there are some periods when I am painfree in them.

I, too, think you need to discuss things with your surgeon.

    Hi Wendy

Sorry to hear that you're having so much trouble with your new knee. Could you try and see your specialist early? What does your GP say? I'm seeing the specialist in September but know already that I need both kness replaced (I saw one in June who said he couldn't hlep me and referred me to someone else!)

A year seems a very long time for this to settle in. I honestly don't know what to say. Do you have physiotherapy?

Take care and I hope someone comes up with some sound advice for you.

I hope that you get some relief soon.

I had a TKR just over two years ago. I recovered quickly with no pain. However, that was me, and we all react differently. I wondered whether you had been back for check ups at all. I had them at six weeks, six months, and then a final one at twelve months.

If I were you I would phone the surgeon`s secretary, and ask for an appointment urgently. I`m sure they would expect you to do this if you feel that things are not quite right. If nothing else, it will set your mind at rest.

I have heard - although I don`t personally know of anyone - that some people who have had multiple replacements, do suffer referred pain. Don`t leave it too long to get some reassurance....Ange.

Thank you for all your comments I do have check ups at the hospital my next one is in Sept; I also am seeing my GP The trouble is as you all know arthritis doesn't stay in one joint or area I have pain in most of my joints I rely on pain relief for the majority of the time. When you have a joint replaced you expect less pain or there is no reason to have it done although you could be right it could be referred pain from my hip that is under consideration for a new one but that wouldn't explain the swelling I get. Yes I did have physio for the first 6 weeks I do try and stay mobile and apart from work I am back to doing most things myself (I am retired now) here is to the next episode of Wendy's knees and hips etc etc etc

Hi wendygroctt , we are in the same boat I was surprised to read someone had the same problems as me , I had my hip replaced a couple of years ago and last year my knee , my hip was great but my knee is still giving me a lot of pain. When i had my hip replaced it left me with an inch difference in leg length which as caused me a lot of problems i think that is why i needed my knee done. I am living on pain killers because as you i have pain in most of my joints , i should be having my other knee replaced but to be honest i cant face it i am going to leave it as long as i can . I have even got it in my voice box now it seems to have gone mad this last 12 months, like you i have retired now, good job i couldnt have worked it takes me all my time to do a little housework. At least we can feel a little better knowing we are,nt alone . keep your chin up and if you want to have a chat you can message me , we can compare bodys and pains all the best sandra (alicea)
