Knee problems

Hi
My back is feeling pretty good at the moment but i have having problems with both knees.
They are fine while i am walking but if i go to bend them they are agony!
Just sitting down on the sofa and getting up again is very painful.
My pain doc said that if you have a back problem it can effect the knees or the neck.
I have tried all the usual treatments ie. rubs, sprays, supports and the "tens" machine on them to no avail.
Any suggestions that i could try would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Heather
If the pain in your knees persists, and you have tried all the usual things, I think it probably needs further investigation with X-rays. I haven't heard that back trouble can affect the knees, but rather the other way round. If you walk with a limp, it can cause back pain.
I would ask your doctor to get some X-rays done to see if any arthritis shows up.

Hi heather1
Firstly I’m not a doctor but sometimes trouble with your back can effect your legs and arms, I have a disc problem in my lower neck and this makes my hands numb and I do get a lot of pain in the shoulders from time to time but I have never come across your back causing bad knee pain before, I would have thought the normal problems you would get from your back would a be sciatic type pain (like tooth ache down the leg) or tingling or numbness but then again I could be wrong, do they get hot and red if you have been using them?, that’s what mine do although I do have bad OA in both my kneecaps, have you thought about going to see another doctor?, that’s what I would do and the sooner the better. Anyway I do hope others on here can shed more light on your problem and I hope you get it sorted soon.

Hi Heather
Is your pain doc leaving you like this, in pain with no suggestions? If so, that is not on , is it? Are you on painkillers and anti inflammatories? Have you tried physio? Have you had any xrays?
Does a heat or cold wraps do anything for you? So many questions!
I hope you have another appointment with the pain doc soon.
Sorry I cannot be of help but you do have my sympathy. I have a knee problem, pretty big time every now and again so know what it is like.

Hi Heather, I was told that my back was causing my knees to hurt. Turns out I have arthur everywhere. I would get your knees checked as the others have said. Heat or ice packs would be my suggestion but you have probably tried that. It does sound as though you need a visit to the doc to get some meds. I hope you get sorted.

Hi Heather,
Here're some practical tips for you:
When you get up from sitting and your knees are painful try this. With your feet flat on the floor and fairly close together concentrate on them and push them hard down onto the floor. You'll find that this will raise your bottom from the seat and then use your back muscles to straighten you up. It won't stop your knees hurting but it should make getting up a little easier.
Also try to sit on seats where your hips are level with your knees, if your hips are lower down than your knees it'll be far more difficult to get up.
Hard seats are usually easier to get out of than soft seats.
Before I sit on unfamiliar seating I measure a seat with the front of my knee and there's a point on my leg where I know if it falls below I'll struggle getting up.
When your knees are less painful and have settled down you'll go back to using all the seats normally again - but these may help tide you over till then.
