Hi
I had no idea that this existed and so have never heard about this till I went for the pre op. but how many of you know that you can donate your bits of bone that they remove when you have your hip replacement. I would never have thought that my knackered bones would be any good for anything, but thats great its no good to me anymore and if it will help someone else I will certainly let them use it.

    My bone isn't good enough!

I was never asked but they would have been most welcome, I was over the moon to be rid of them!

The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.

If you can lay down at night knowing in your heart that you made someone's day just a little bit better, you know you had a good day.

Its something I didn't realise was possible, but like a lot of things in medicine, times have changed and although I am not having surgery and so do not have to think about it, I see no logical reason for not allowing this process to go ahead. Transplant surgery is something I would willingly take part in as a doner, should such a situation arise. I'm registered, my family all agree with my views and that is that, as far as I'm concerned.

When I had my hip op the bone was donated .Did you also know that when you have a knee replacement the drains they put in drain into a special plastic bag then it is recycled back into you as a transfusion I can't remember what the process is called. But apparently there is a lot of blood loss from a knee op and by doing this procedure of recycling your own blood it cuts down on having to have someone else's blood now that's technology

    Hi again
I had no idea this has been done for as long as 16years. I have been on the donor register for years and just assumed that its organs ie. heart, liver, etc. I was so impressed when I was told about it, I thought that all of my bones were knackered and wouldnt be of any use to anyone, cos lets face it they are not much good to me, but hey if it will help someone else. GREAT

    Hi
The bone goes to a Tissue Bank and is stored until used for clinical/research purposes or the bone is used in patients who have suffered bone loss due to disease, trauma or previous surgery.

    Hi
I was never asked and I actually didnt know this existed or I would certainly have donated it. I did give my placenta's for research after i had my 2 children as i had had several miscarriages and was on a treatment trial. (hope that wasnt a bit too much information  )
