Hi
I have o/a and sometimes I have periods of everything being really bad at once, depressing and disabling me.It also affects sleep so you feel even worse.I think of this as a flare up but the doc has never actually used that description.

Hi,
I am the same as Linda, never officially told it is a flare up but that is what I call it when it is worse than usual.

I think that the Drs refer to inflammatory flares like in RA and PsA. Then again, I would expect OA to have an occasional inflammatory flare if the joint had been stressed or injured further. It's a layman's term so I wouldn't read to much into it. We all know what you mean... unfortunately!0

Hi Ivor
I asked a consultant once if you can get oa flares and his answer was yes.
I get better days and better weeks than others. Sleep goes in patterns too. At the moment I am sleeping ok but then I get weeks where I sleep for 2 hours and then in pain so not sleeping well. I eventually get up and warm a wheat bag in the microwave and that seems to solve the problem. I can only put the wheat bag on one area of pain so I often have to choose where, but it sends me to sleep. When the alarm goes off I am always asleep and could sleep for ages, as I am sooooooooo comfortable, but don't. Typical isn't it?

Hi, I agree that their is a lot to learn, when you have arthritis, whatever type it is. I have OA and I find that sometimes I'm better than others. I can't say its the same as RA paients get, because I don't have the experience of RA to compare it with.
We are all different and this means that the problems that come with illness are also diferent too. I have good times and bad times. Days when the pain is so bad it just takes over my thinking, but other days when the pain is only in the background and I can put it out of my mind for a bit. I can't find any reason for this, except I know if I overdo physical exercise, I feel it the next day, and want to just laze around and rest all day, taking pain killers and feeling sorry for myself. Thats just my experience and I'm sure other people have other experiences, Love sue0 -
Just before Christmas I was really bad and this was what I thought I would always be like but the doc tried different anti inflams and after 3 different ones I suddenly perked up.My flare lasted about 4.5 months.
I now feel much better and have lost the bit of weight I had put on and joined the gym.
I swim some days and I can use some machines on other days.
While nowhere near my old self the improvement is fantastic.
When the weater is wet I ache a lot but am more mobile than I was.
Hope you keep wellish

Hi,
I have OA in my hands and lower back, and though I've been told that 'flare ups' are usually associated with RA, I certainly get them! Usually they're fairly short-lived, fortunately - last week for 2 days I could hardly walk, or turn over in bed. Putting on my socks or standing up from a chair was enough to make me screech with the pain. At the same time both hands/thumbs became very painful. There was no apparent reason for it worsening. After a couple of days things started to improve, and I'm nearly back to 'normal' now - or as near normal as my joints ever get! I'm convinced that the weather affects my arthritis, as is my mum who also has it.
Wish I could work out what sets these flare ups off, and therefore how to avoid them :?
