Hi folks,
I recently went to a new fortnightly meeting at the Rheumatology Outpatients Department, Haywood Hospital, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.

It meets the 1st and 3rd Thursdays in the month, from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Tomorrow nights meeting has a talk from a Consultant Physiotherapist on the subject "Exercise for People with Rheumatoid Arthritis", followed by a chat and refreshments.

I am really looking forward to this, as I have been wondering about exercises, the benefits or dangers!

So if you aren't doing anything, why not pop in to make some new friends with people who understand your condition? And you can bring friends/family/carers with you too.

See you there (hopefully) :D

What a nice thought Jackie but it's a fair way to travel for me, especially as I can't drive.

Hope it goes well and let us know how you go on.

    Luv Legs :D

Hello, I'm glad to hear that the hospital is doing something so positive to help you. It must be nice for you to meet people with problems and some of the staff on a casual basis and I hope that it will help you all with relationships in the more formal setting of the clinics etc. Hope it all continues to go well. Love Sue

It was a great meeting! Everyone is so nice and friendly - and the talk on exercise was very interesting. The next one is on 20th August, and the talk is an introduction to 'Meditation', to help us all relax :) Starting at 7pm, all welcome.

I must say 'hello' to Radka :) who told me she does read postings on here but hasn't yet registered herself.

They have one at Kettering General Hospital where I go.
    Very good.
I think a lot of the same thing will be covered possibly a lot more on the Self Management coursesrun by Arthritis Care. I am going to one in Corby soon.

If you contact the Helpline Team they will help you.

Haywood Hospital Rheumatology Dept. Thurs 1.10.09 7pm

    Hi, Thanks for replies.

I must admit I was not sure whether to go along to the first RA meeting of the group or not........ would I be surrounded by people crippled with the condition and whinging on and on about how hard life was? Would it depress me more than the diagnosis already had? Would I be seeing my future reflected in a group of strangers - and would that frighten me more?

All my fears were unfounded! As I walked along the corridor, following the sound of laughter, I was surprised and delighted to find a group of intelligent, sociable, happy people :)
People who, at first glance, looked quite 'normal'; okay, on closer inspection there were some with a few tell tale signs of RA, but NOT the grossly deformed images that I had created in my mind!

The Meetings are interesting, lively, and sociable, with Guest Speakers giving informative advice and support.

So, anyone hesitating, PLEASE, pop along to the HAYWOOD HOSPITAL - a warm welcome awaits :)

    Hi Jackie
is the Haywood the one where people go for rehablilitation after illness/injury?
I hope it was really good - I would maybe have come (I live in Cannock) but had been to the a/c day in leamington yesterday and was exhausted!
Thanks for letting us know and can you mention it again next time?
    Thanks

    Hi Jackie

So, a lot like us lot on here then :lol: luv, Lynn xx

LOL, yes, just like us lot on here

Toni, its in Burslem, Stoke on Trent, and it has an excellent reputation. You are probably correct about people going for rehabilitation, I only know about the Rheumatology side really!

The Formal Opening was very good, followed by a buffett and drop of sparkly. I will post on here when the next meeting is, would love to see you there :)

    Hi

It appears that you are aware of the NRAS meetings that are held at the hospital on Thursday evenings, but I wondered if you were aware of the Arthritis Care North Staffordshire & District Self-help Group which meets Monday evenings and takes place at the same hospital, same area, between 6.30 and 9.00 pm where we meet for tea, coffee a biscuit and a chat for those who don't wish to use the hydrotherapy pool - and for those who would like to take advantage of the hydrotherapy pool, we have half hour sessions with a qualified exercise instructor.

Should anyone be interested let me know and I will post more details.

Hi, Thanks for that nannyc :)

The next meeting of the NRAS group is this Thursday, 5th November at the Rheumatology Dept, 7pm.
The guest speaker this week is Specialist Nurse Ann Brownfield, with a talk on 'The Role of Biologic Therapy', which sounds very interesting.
