hi everyone...just after a bit of advice having been diagnosed a couple of month ago with early stages of oa.
for last couple of days one of my feet has swelled up and is extremely painfull to try and walk on....also a number of joints in my body are constantly making cracking noises every time i move..
having only had mild pain in my hands and feet before, how long does it normally last and is this what it becomes like or could i have another problem with my foot ??
also is it worth seeing my doctor to get something for the pain or do you just take paracetmol and suffer.
thanks andy

Hi Andy,
I don't have OA as I'm a Rheumatoid but it sounds as if this is just a flare-up. Paracetamol, for me, is a good pain killer especially when I take it every 6 hours - it's always better when it's taken regularly but it's a back-up for me with my other medication.
It strikes me you should see your GP and get him/her to prescribe you an anti inflammatory and that should help with swellings and pain.

hi andy,i have 2nd stage oa so i have all the cracking but only a little swelling.my flare ups never seem to end as all my joints are now affected with oa.
the cracking im told is normal, its gas betwen the joints.hopefully some 1 else can explain that better than me.
as for the drs,yes you do need to keep them informed of whats going on as there your frontline in your treatment.
you can ask them for ibrupofen or dicolofenic to help with the swelling & there are stronger painkillers than paracetomol.
i take cocodomol(paracetamol/codiene) 30/500,8a day. ibuprofen 400mg 3 a day,zomorph 10 ml slow release twice daily,oramorph as needed & 50ml amptripyline at night for sleep.yes i rattle well
it takes a while to find the right combination of meds that work as were all different.im also off to the hospital tomoorow for my 2nd lot of cortosone injections.so theres lots that can be done for pain relief but you need to go back to the drs even make a nuisance of youself if need be to get treatment that you need.have you been refered to rhymy? right i hope that help you a bit, just post if you have any more questions as you'll soon get a response on here.debsx0 -
thanks debs/legs for your advice...
i saw a consultant privately who diagnosed me and he just said take paracetmol and that was that...doctor has done nothing but give me another sick note.
i have tried taking strong paracetmol but they are doing nothing and so i am now on the cider/wine to help me sleep later.
my foot is so painful - it feels like my big toe is broken and all the foot has swollen. i cant put any weight on it at all....think i better go to the docs tomorrow if its still the same.

Andy,
Have you tried an ice pack on your foot?
Wrap your foot in a damp towel and then put on a bag of frozen peas and leave on for 20 minutes. Remove and gently move your foot around without weight bearing - this may help to bring the swelling down a bit and should help with the pain. Heat packs can help too and you just have to pop them in the microwave for a few minutes.

PS Don't eat the frozen peas  , mark and refreeze to use again
PPS Pour me a glass whilst you're there will youLove, Legs x

Hi
Just a thought, have you been tested for gout. My dad had that and its sounds very simliar to what he had. Also when my knee flared up I was tested for it, I didn't have it though.
I think you need to see your dr if only to get some stronger meds and try and rest your foot as much as possible.
Hope it all calms down soon.
Mine's a large glass of red.

Hi Andy
I have OA (knees, hands, shoulder) and I'm on co-dydramol 8 a day; diclofenac 3 a day; amytriptline 2 at night. I would suggest you see your GP and explain about the pain. I have discomfort every day and would like to say to you my OA has got better but it hasn't. My mobility continues to deteriorate. I now walk with the aid of a stick. I used to get swollen feet if I was on my feet a lot in the early stages of OA.
I get noises in my knee joints but have got used to them.
Have you had x rays/bloods done?
I hope you feel better soon.

rita you were right.. severe attack of gout in left foot.
doctor has prescribed naproxen to get swelling/pain down and will then look at treating it longer term.

Hi Andy
Glad you've got something for your pain.

reading up on it, it appears that wine is about the only alcohol that you can have without it causing further problems ! damn0

I cam back an hour ago, from shopping at Morrisons, Holyhead. the drive down the motorway was extremely painful, my knee and hip, almost unbearable such that I had to stop in a lay by, to stretch them. i took a tramadol, now I have gotten used to them, all I can say, keep taking the tablets!!!! but use them with great care. they do work!!!
I take paracetamol, six a day, sometimes, eight being maximum. they are not very effective but as someone here said, at least they do help.
like all things one has to balance this condition. I had a nice three mile walk through the dingle at Llangefni yesterday, took my walking pole and did very well,
now, it is a matter of resting , there is no alternative. even if we we feel like walking or gardening, one has to bear in mind the consequences.
whatever you do, don't just suffer it!!!!
