Hello,

I am 3 weeks post surgery after having an osteochondralplasty on my right hip. I am still on crutches non load bearing and the lovely surgical stockings.

Today I have noticed swelling of my right leg from the knee downwards. Is this part of the healing process or is this something I should maybe get checked?

Thanks

Anne

    Hi Anne :D

Ooooooh the wonderful surgical stockings  - I know them well!!:lol: That is one heck of a mouthful, the op you had but I have a feeling that swelling from the knee downwards is quite common after a hip and knee op and you should try to rest, perhaps a little more, with your leg elevated, as high as is comfortable for you. The use of an ice pack at the same time, may well lessen the swelling too.

Are you being a "naughty" girl and perhaps being more on your feet than you should be?:lol: It is easily done, I know and such a temptation, to think, I'll just do that ........ and that...... and then I will rest.:lol:

It is very early days since your op but if it is really worrying you, I hope you have a number you are able to call. I take it, you are in no pain because that, to me, would be something totally different.

    Hi Anne

Can you ring the ward that you were on for some advise? The nurses might know or at least ask the surgeon for you.

    Hi,

Elna, I think you are right, I have been doing too much. I was told total R&R for 6 weeks before all the physio etc kicks in, I am still on the strong meds that I got from the hospital after surgery so the pain is tolerable.

But, I feel guilty sitting about all day and yesterday I went on a cleaning freny when my husband was at work. I gutted the kitchen, including inside the fridge, the oven...

My OH has told me to leave everything and he is great doing the house and going to the shops when he gets home. But I feel as if I should do more as I am in all day.

I think this is what caused the swelling, it has went down a good bit after resting last night. Just goes to show will need to be more careful.

Only 3 weeks until I get rid of the lovely stockings, think I will have a sacrificial burning.

Thanks for your help and advice.

    Hi Anne :D

Yep, you have definitely been doing too much, gutting the kitchen - even I did not do that after my TKR. :lol: and I am like you, always wanting to be doing smething or other.

I remember now I was told by the consultant, you have had a major operation so R.I.C.E. - RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

So I hope you will do that this weekend :lol::lol: Enjoy the sunshine. Hope you are sharing the sun with us in Bucks.

I am also 3 weeks post op for a THR.
I had some swelling from thigh to knee which concerned me so I went on the helpline to ask for their advice.

They will give you the advice you need.
