hi all,i was talking to a few people at the pain clinic on thursday about where i live & the trouble im having with my mobility.ie stairs & the fact im relying on my crutches more & more.i really cant face moving & my o/h doesnt want to move either.
we only have a 2 bedroomed rented ,end of terrace.but have a good size garden & parking for at least 6 cars on the drive.
the house is adjecent to a park so wouldnt have any problem with adding to the house.
my questions are,can i get a grant approved to have a downstairs toilet/bedroom added to the house or would it be easier to get a stair lift added.
ive looked briefly at community grants but thought they were more for people owning not renting.
i did have problems with the bath rails & 2nd stair rail being added as the walls are not outside walls & it would be the same for stair lift/inner walls/plasterboard.
my housing officer is hopeless too,i cant even understand what he says & he kicked up a stink about my rails.so had to fight to get them instaled.there put in but not how the housing officer insisted.or i would be without.any ideas, debsx

Hi Debs, not sure where you live but I live in Macclesfield, with the help of the OT I got a Disabled Facilities Grant from the council to create a low level shower, it is means tested but I didn't have to pay anything, might be worth looking into love Jaspercatxx

Hi, I don't know what the situation is now and in your area, but some time ago the council gave my brother a grant for a downstairs shower room. As Jasper says, the OT was the one to reccommend it. Good Luck Love Sue

    Hi Debs

Much less work involved with a stairlift than the extension and if you ever move it can go with you. I'm sure you can get some sort of grant for them, try social services and see if they can help.

Just googled social services and there is a bit that says you can get grants for rented as long as it's your main home :)

    Good luck.

    Love

hi all & thanks for the replies.
i have had the social service ****. done & they recommended the shower, walk in to replace the bath.
problem ive got is i cant reach to wash hair so i sit in bath & o/h can wash it for me.so i put off having the shower installed until i really cant manage bath any more.i have got bath rails & 2nd stair rails fitted by there request.
as i said the idea of a stair lift maybe a problem with the house being mainly plaster board thats why i thought a downstairs toilet would be more suitable for the property.
i'll do a bit of research, try to talk to gp & housing ****. see what they come up with too.
i'll have a look at the disability grants too.
    thanks all, debsx

Hi when they did my stair lift they also talked about putting me a downstairs bathroom so the disabled facilities grant will cover that as well best of luck
