it happens day or night but a long with this my sleeping has gone to pot! i'm waking anything upto 12 times a night, again really hot!

    Hi
I am 29. I always get hot flushes when I am about to have a flare up. It is an indication to go up to the GP and get a course of steroids to prevent. It is much better than ebing in pain so I count myself quite lucky I get a head start on the arthritis and kick it into touch!! lol

Hi Suzster, I am 37, I have RA and lupus and am on steroids. I have been suffering from this it is so embarrassing. It is mainly my head that sweats, my hair becomes soaking wet. I don't know what it is. I googled it and it mentions thyroid. I am planning on mentioning it to the gp when I am brave enough to leave the house!!! Le3t me know if you find an answer. It is interesting that someone else has it, I have had it for about 6 weeks now.

thanks all, i'm 35, i have an underactive thyroid but it has been well controlled for about 8 yrs now.
but yes, it is the sweaty head thing, my forehead gets dripping wet, and as you said it is embarrassing!
maybe i'll speak to my gp?
but it does seem to tie in with the bad night, since it started and fradually got worse so has my sleeping, i am waking so often in pain and so hot! i have a fan pointing at me all night to try to help!

    Hi Suz,

We can get the sweats with RA - in the old days it used to be called rheumatic fever and it's when the rheumatoid is not yet controlled in our body. I find hot flushes with the menopause different in that, FOR ME, they only last a couple of minutes and are not just the head but mainly upper body. The sweats with RA last longer but I did find they happened mostly at night.

You'd be wise to mention it to your GP as planned as we can often dismiss things as being our arthritis and it''s not always the case.

ditto to most of the above.

I did mention it to my GP and she did a test for the menopause (I'm 41) which is not the problem, and also thyroid, also came back ok, so we have decided that it is the RA and also because I taek after my dad who can break out in a sweat just thinking about moving!

Mine is often worse at night. It is crazy - half the time I have two quilts because I feel the cold more than I used to at night time, and the rest of the time I am throwing off the covers and putting the fan on. We have a pedestal fan in the bedroom and particularly in the summer it is often on all night on a 'sleep' setting which gives little gusts of wind rather than a fierce on-all-the-time fan.

Certainly get checked, because legs is so right that it is vbery easy to put things down to arthur when they are not. But, maybe also keep a diary of how your joints are, and see if the hot sweats coincide with times that your joints are worse - it is often the case for me that they match up as others have said.

    Hi

Funny you should say that but I've been experiencing being hot and clammy for the past few weeks. Mine happens throughout the day and mainly affedts my upper body. I wondered if it was the meds. I sometimes get very hot and night too.

I used to take two amytriptilines at night. But was waking up feeling really sick(and being sick once or twice) so cut it down to one. Amys are pretty strong muscle relaxants and I often wonder what else they might affect - I wake up at least 3/4 times a night for a wee. Luckily I fall back to sleep pretty quickly. I wonder if this drug relaxes my bladder!!! - I know it sounds far fetched but it did cross my mind.

I am the right age to be menopausal ........ hopefully someone will put us right about the nature of these 'hot flushes'. My mother told me she went through the menopause without a problem.

on a similiar note, i found since taking the morphine or amytriptyline, not sure which, i can't hold on like i used to, when i need a wee, i need it quick, not something i ever had a problem with before RA came along, these meds can mees our bodies up thats for sure!
last night i went to bed as uasual at 9.30pm, i woke up 6 times before evetually giving up at 4.40am! i got up and stood outside the front door for 10 mins then as i felt terrible, hot and so achy.
i've had sleep problems as has everyone since RA started but it is getting worse now, i think my neck, shoulder and knee pain are much worse at night and that along with the hot flushes is just unbearable. i'm disturbing my poor husband to, last night in a huff he went and slept in the lounge because i was disturbing him so much, this does nothing to help, in fact it upsets me, but i can't help it.
i'm going to go and ring the dr's after 2pm and get an appointment asap.

ooh I am glad you posted this as I have been having these sweats. My husband has been taking the mick a lot saying its my age only 38! I also have underactive thyroid (for 10 years now) but they supposedly have that under control? I take thyroxine and they do random bloods but I never hear anything. Mind you will be pleased if it is menopause as having lot of trouble with a lot of joints and was told that would be only eligible for MRI when I start menopause?!

yes, my thyroid is all good, i to never hear anything after blood tests so i assume it's ok?!!!!
my husband said yesterday "it's the change" i nearly knocked him out lol, i'm only 35!!!! he thinks the sweat thing is not worth moaning about, but it's horrible just suddenly getting all hot and sweaty for no reason, i met a friend last week and she must of thought i'd run a mile to meet her, not just got of a train!!! i had sweat dripping from my forehead and was looking quite flushed, i couldn't explain why i looked so bad!!!! i feel really conscious when out in case it happens. and waking up in the night like is nasty. still maybe my dr can help?!

I agree, it is horrible. I used to only get it at night but now I get it in the day and it is embarrassing. I look like I have run a marathon, dripping sweat and my hair looks like I have got out of the shower!!! Not nice! Its funny a few of us have this when we are not of 'that' age! It must be the arthritis, not a pleasant symptom though. I wonder what the doc will say?

my mum (and others to) keeps saying it's the hot weather everyone gets hot and sweaty, but these hot flushes are different, like we've said it's only really my head that gets hot and sweaty and it seems to happen for no reason, i'm sat here now and i'm having one, all i'm doing is sat at the computer, not running, lol!!!

just out of interest have you noticed any other female issues?
i've found my 'monthly' is so much worse than it used to be, more painful (considering i take morphine it must be bad!) and much, much heavier and my sex drive (sorry!) has left the building, also since arthur entered the building!!!
but my rheumy keeps telling me these are nothing to do with my RA or meds, somehow i'm not convinced she's right!

Yes agree that the sweats are different from normal hot sweaty weather ones and really fast and intense (if that makes sense?). Don't know about monthly stuff as have a coil and havent had period for years. Yes its funny isn't it that when you try and make connections docs always poo poo the idea and yet when you receive the meds the list of side effects is that long you could paper your bathroom with it!

You lot should worry, I started having hot flushes at 30! Seriously, I'd had a total hystorectomy for severe endomitriouis. I had HRT and stiill do. I took part in the experiment that allowed the patches to be licisensed in this country, and I'm quite proud that I can say I've done my bit for science!!!!  I often wonder, these days if my gyny probs have anything to do with arthritis, but thats just a thought. HRT really works, though! Love Sue

    Hi
Just to say I really empathise with you. I am getting them big time at the moment, only I should be as I am much older than you at 54 (well alright 55 next month!) I wear layers so I can whip em off as the body temp starts rising p010.gif
I also always keep wet wipes in my bag or if I am at home I put a cold flannel at the back of my neck. I have the windows open at night and keep a cold glass of water by the bed.
Also if your hair is long enough, putting it in a pony tail and keeping it off your neck helps keep you cooler.

i used to love wearing my long hair down, now it's always up for this reason, i've often thought about getting it cut short, but i love my hair to much!!
yes, luckily i always have wipes as i need them for little one, but i can't even wear a bit of make-up as it gets rubbed off! oh the joys!!!
my dr is on holiday due to summer holidays and having kids so i can't see her and the thought of explaining everything to a dr that doesn't know me fills me with dread, silly i know!
it does make me feel better knowing i'm not alone with this though, i was beginning to think i was just a big sweaty mess!!!

Thank you for the cold flannel tip, I will try that!!

Have been reading up and have discovered that raynauds can cause this and neuropathy can. I have raynauds, wondered how many others have who are experiencing this?
