early morning stiffness in legs

I have recently been diagnosed with OA of the hip and prescribed Naproxen which I am taking. Pain wise has been pretty good recently just the odd twinge. However, when I get up in the mornings it's like I have wooden legs - I can hardly get down the stairs. Also if I have to sit for any length of time, when I get up I find it hard to walk - not because of pain but my legs just don't seem to move.

My husband is 20 years older than me and he walks faster than I do and I have a job to keep up, lol.

Anybody else get this, or any help/advice on what I can do to ease it.

    Hi Cruisdolly

Yes, I get this. I am just aware of it now and take it carefully for a time until everything warms up again, so to speak. A shower or bath helps, but we can't keep doing that can we?

Besides at night, for obvous reasons, we just have to try and not sit too long, keep getting up or in the car, having breaks to get out and have a little stretch and walk about. It is inconvenient but just another of those things we have to put up with. At least we can get around, so that is a blessing.

Hope your day is going ok,

    Love

    Hi Cruisedolly,

The morning stiffness I do get, I think its cus you been still over night but just go carefull till everything gets going again. I now take some of my tablets before I get up and that.for me, helps. So does the stretching exercises and if it hurts I move it and it usually frees up. Hips though are not too advanced for me yet. I hope your now feeling better? Take care Cris

    Hi Cruisedolly,

I think you will find some on the AC pages cus I sort of had this for so long I have developed my own....... It involves knee bending before I get up, Head raising and movements to the side and pulling the muscles a bit on both shoulders and them I do a good impersonation of a Kelly doll trying to stand up! Once up I stretch to the sides and get my shoulder up and down and then walk a bit like a drunk to the kettle! Tea is so needed!

Have a look at the exercises on the AC pages cus they will have the real ones. Mine work for me but I should hate you to hurt your self, and thats the bottom line if it hurts stop.

    Take care,

    Cris

Hi, sorry to be a bit dim, but where are the AC pages, I can't find them - what does AC stand for? My biggest problem is getting down the stairs, both feet on one step at a time, lol

    Hi Cruisedolly,

Its like Val said, AC is Arthritis Care and if you go to the types of arthritis and on the left side is a lost I think there is one saying fact sheet downloads and click on that and one of the available down loads are exercises.

Mornings are not the best time of day are they? You just take it easy with the stairs and remember good goes up first and bad goes down first. Hope you have a good day, Take Care Cris

    Hi Cruisedolly

If you are having problems finding these exercise sheets and would like a copy, why not give the helpline a call and they can arrange to get them sent to you by post if you like.

You can call (tel no at top of page) or leave them a message on the Chat to our Helpline Team zone.
