Hi all, Been to Rheumy today and all seem very helpful but they want to put me on me 15mg of methotrexate weekly and hydrochloroquine 1 tab per day and the usual folic acid.
Has anyone been offered this combo as seems a little worrying as the latter is used in malaria symtoms! but was advised they work well together

    Hi Karina
I am on hydroxy 2 tabs 2xs daily and I know others have the mtx too. I think it can be a good combo. Ignore the malaria!! Well at least we won't get that eh?!
    You doing ok?
You seem to be getting very organised and on top of things.
    Take care

Hi Karina,I've been put on Hydroxy and did read it was used for Malaria but apparently it does work also for arthritis. :) At the moment I'm just taking Hydroxy but the past few days have found some pain coming back in my hands.I was on Naproxen and Omeprazole but the rheumy took me off Naproxen and put me on Hydroxy. Then when I last saw my GP he told me to stop taking the Omeprazole so the only thing I'm on now is Hydroxy.Anyone else on Hydroxy who still has to take the Omeprazole?I must say since coming off steroids I have felt very tired and no energy. :( Breane x.

Still havn't been able to get Hydroxy at my local chemists. Are others still having the same problem?

    Hi,
I have been on the hydroxy + 15 mg Mtx combo since the end of April for RA and it seems to be having an effect, though it has taken a long time. Compared to how I felt when I was diagnosed in April I feel like a different person! I was having problems walking and was in constant and excruciating pain in hands and feet and now I am doing most of the things I was doing before it all started, though I do have to pace myself. I am still stiff in the mornings for about half an hour and some days my bum and leg muscles are quite painful so I have to take pain killers (diclofenac) but I think I am noticing an improvement week by week. No pain in hands at all now and the nodules I had have disappeared too. Yesterday I spent the day wandering around London Zoo with my 2 year old grandson for about 5 hours and apart from a few twinges I was fine and had a brilliant time with him!
I was nervous about taking this combo too, at first, but thought anything would be preferable to how I was feeling at the start of all this so decided to go with it anyway. I have been lucky - no side effects to speak of (apart from my own impatience at the length of time it takes to work!)
You will be monitored regularly and frequently so if anything amiss shows up it will be picked up very quickly so try not to worry too much. Both meds have been around for a long time and have been tried and tested so I reckon enough is known about them to ensure that they are safe and effective and offer a good chance of putting the RA into remission. I do hope they work for you as well as they have for me. Good luck!
