Hi - can anybody tell me if they also have experienced weight gain because of their arthiritis. I had a steroid injection into my wrist 3 weeks ago but even before that I was beginning to put more weight on, despite a lack of appetite and being careful of what I eat because I also have diabetes. So as you can imagine despite being relatively pain free at the moment because of the injection(thank goodness) the fact that I am finding it impossible to lose weight is still causing me to feel very down as I feel very very fat and bloated. Any ideas people please. :(

    Hi topcat
One steroid inj wouldn't put weight on you but high doses of steroids do. Could it be that your arthur has left you less mobile therefore you are not as active? As for feeling fat and bloated, I have irritable bowel syndrome and often feel like this. Sometimes the meds also cause these problems.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
    Take care

Hello, I have OA, but when I'm less active, like say, not doing as much housework, as I don't feel well my weight tends to increase a few pounds. I had also had a job as a care assistant whidh kept me very active, but I not working now.
My husband has type 2 diabetes, and was never over weight until put on metformin then his weight increased. About 6 months or so ago he was found to have a problem with his thyriod, which requires medication (underactive?) and he has just lost quite a bit of weight and gained loads more energy! :D Its something diabetics are prone to the gp said and no real problem. I expect you have yours checked routinely, just a thought. :)

Hi Topgirl, I have put on so much weight due to steroids and inactivity. I tried weight watchers and lost a stone, but I was starving all the time!!! I tried slimming world then, but got demotivated as everyone lost more than me as I was on steroids. I should go again, but I don't lose a lot due to steroids and as I have kidney probs, I can gain quite a lot with swelling and it is so demoralising.

I admire you for going, stick with it. I really hope it works for you.

Hi there, yes I've put on over a stone in the last 3 months. I think it's due to steroids (20mg tablets daily), which have made me so hungry. I've tried really hard to watch what I eat, and have done quite well in not eating junk. I think it's more to do with the fact that I'm not moving at all due to my pain and stiffness. I'm not burning any calories because I'm just sat on my bum all day!

When I have positive days I've tried to do some exercise like gentle yoga and stretching or sit ups, which don't put pressure on my joints.

Thanks for all your comments - yes I am a lot less active than I used to be because of the pain and the utter tiredness due to both RA and the diabetes so no hoper really. I do try but it was nice to hear that I am not the only one to have gained weight with metformin. My doctor has even prescribed orlistat for me (alli) and even that didn't make much of an impression - it just gets you down when your clothes don't fit and you feel fat and ugly on top of everything else. :(

I am sure you are not fat and ugly, but I know that feeling. If I ever say anything to my friends they say it is better to have your health and a bit of weight than be ill and thin. Somedays I am not sure about that!!!!:lol::lol:
