hi all,i wrote the other day saying my gp says my wrist/hand pain isnt carpel tunnel. he's refered me for wrist splints.
ive just got out the bath & noticed my thumb were the boney lumpy squared of bit ends, its now gone further down my wrist.
its hard to explain,it seems like the bone below my thumb is now deforming in the wrist.
its squaring off the same & bone is standing out  about an inch of bone.no wonder its painful.
anyone else got this or is it normal with oa :?:
secondly WRIST splints, will i have difficulties using my crutches with these :?: or can they adapt them. :?:
sorry for more questions.but i didnt notice the boney bits before i saw gp  proberbly because of the bit of swelling (not much)was hiding it & the baths took it down. thanks debsx

    hi, thanx for your reply.
its weird that i didnt see it before the gp appointment, but ive been wearing tubigrip.
the bath tonight has took down the bit of swelling & thats when i noticed it
its all to do with the oa im sure.
thats why gps refered me for splints.

    Hi Debs

If you mean deformation at the bottom of the thumb joint is standing out near the wrist like mine both are, that is the oa. If I stretch my fingers and thumb out and look at the palm of my hand my thumb joint is sort of turning in towards the palm and it should not be so. I get horrid pain every so often or bouts of it. I do sometimes drop things i have picked up but can do most things - presumably I have adapted. It does look horrid though - I hate it. I describe my thumb right down to the joint, looking at it, straight on, looking a little like a chicken drumstick!!!!!:lol:

I have to laugh or I would probably cry! a couple of years ago I asked a hand specialist if it would worsen and he replied it is already as bad as it is going to get.

    Luv

hi elna, yes i have the deformed thumb at base of joint as you descibe but this is now the bit under neath.the attual wrist bone.
the bone in wrist has gone the same way as the thumb.
but the pain is coming from that bit of bone & i think its aggrevaiting the tendon or nerves as its deforming.
just didnt realise the wrist could go the same way as thumb.
the other hand is joining in slowly too,oh the joys.
hopefully the splints will help with the pain, just waiting for the appointment to come through.
    thanks for you help,luv debsx

    Hi

I don't know why your wrists are like this. Did they do any x-rays?

I hope you get some answers.

    Take care.

i keep getting nodules at the base of my fingers. i had one a few months back and had an ijection into the joint and i vanished quite quickly. i now have one at the base of my middle finger and it is really hurting me, i can't bend that finger without it catching and really hurting. i'm going to have to wait to get it checked though.
i don't know if your problem is similiar but they are a pain in the ..... joint!

hi & thanks  ,ive not had any xrays on my hands as yet.
but the deforming bits are very clear.
i did have a steriod injection into the thumb a while back & thats helped a bit.
i see rhymy again in dec so not long now.
ive changed back to dicolfenacs for a bit too,& they also seem to help.

    Hi Debs

I too have had the steroid injections in my thumbs and they always work like magic for 6 weeks or so. Now, as the pain only comes and goes, I have not bothered to ask for any more injections.

I have sent you a little pm.

Hi, my hands are different shapes around the thumb area, Funnily, the left, which is the painful one has the thumb turning in towards my palm, the right hand has more movement and less pain. I think what you've noticed is that arthritis is causing your joints to change shape and the bones alter shape in some way. Oh, I'm whaffling again. I mean like a bunion on you hand!!! Sorry, not very sensible remark - I'm getting tired. Love Sue
