Anyone recognise these symptoms, please?

Hi,
I've got OA in my lumbar spine, but am fairly used to dealing with that - it's wonderful what a pain killer and a hot bath or hot water bottle can do! However, recently I've been getting a toothache like pain going around the pelvic ridge area above my right hip (not inside the hip joint itself) and, when it's at its worst, down the front of my thigh. The area is very tender to touch, too.
I'm unable to sit for more than a few minutes without setting it off. Walking more than a short distance, especially uphill, brings it on too.
My Dr says that it's not OA in my hip, and that it doesn't seem to fit the standard symptoms of sciatica, but that it may be connected with my spinal problem. :?
Does this sound familiar to anyone - and if so, any suggestions about dealing with it please?
Thanks
Naomi

Hi, it does sound as if it could be coming from your back. Maybe something is pressing on a nerve. That type of pain can radiate down your thigh. It could be the hip though, it can be hard to tell where pain is coming from in that area. Sorry, I am not being very helpful am I. It does sound similar to my pain, and mine is in my back. Did the gp offer you any pain relief? or an anti-inflammatory?
I hope it settles down for you.

Hi Naomi,
it's fairly much what I get though mine is more to the side than the front. Mine gets me walking especially up hill and its not so keen on steps either. I did have my hips x rayed a while back and have got early onset. The one that hurts the most has more movement so I sort of think mine is the hip........ However I do have advanced oa in my back so it might be from that? I am kinda thinking it might be time to mention my hips again to the Rumo when I see him next month but then I also am doing a bit of an ostrich over my hips as well........ What ever is causing yours I hope it soon eases up for you and settles down. Take care, Cris0 -
Hi Naomi
Jut a huge stab in the dark would it possibly be sacroiliac joint dysfunction? Lying down should not be a problem but walking and standing generally are. You say sitting starts it off, but I am not sure if this is the case with this ailment. My SIL has been diagnosed with this and is having physio. Her gp seemed to know what it was and she also had an xray which confirmed the diagnosis.
I do hope it sorts itself out soon whatever it is. That sort of pain is debilitating, isn't it? I have sciatica at the mo, well have had it off and on since last November, so know a little of what it is like.

Hi Naomi
Google hip bursitis and see if that meets your symptoms. If it does then treatment is rest at first and ice - then chortisone injections. I had my first for this (hopefully?!) on friday gone and am hoping to feel much better any second NOW....!!!

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. I don't think that it can be sacroiliac joint dysfunction as it's painful to lie down - especially if I lie on the affected hip - often wakes me up in fact.
I've googled bursitis, and it does seem to match - thanks Frogmorton - I'll hve to visit my GP now and politely suggest it & see what he says - he takes a lot of persuading to do ANYTHING!
Maybe it is just the OA though, as it matches your symptoms pixyandfaries - have you found anthing that helps to relieve the pain at all?
Someone once suggested that it could stem from a tight Ipsopsoas muscle (not sure if that's how you spell it!))
Anyone else heard of that :?
Thanks again,

Hi It does sound as if its coming from your back, if its nerve pain, sometimes we feel it in all sorts of funny places. I get sacroiliac pain, but the phyiso said its coming from my back.

This sounds familiar to me, I had SPD with my second daughter what you are explaining sounds similar. One thing you could try which doesn't cost a thing but may be difficult for you to do, and you won't have to see anyone about it is this: Lay on your front on a bed or high service and hang the leg over the side that is painful. This will release the pressure on your sciatic nerve and may give you some relief. Worth a try as if it works you are out of pain, if it doesn't then you will know it is something else... also it will release the muscle you were talking about too. Hope that helps (for anyone interested, I am a fully qualified massage therapist, where I learnt this technique, and it works, I know as I tried it myself!) I don't practise anymore as I didn't have enough clients to cover my insurance, had to pull the plug in April.

Hi,
Thanks for all your suggestions and sympathy.
I'm lucky enough to have a good friend who is a nurse and an aromatherapist and also does massage. She came round on Monday night and said that the problem was due to refered pain from a nerve in my lower back that was being pinched because my muscles were so tight. Half an hour of massage has brought a big improvement - and the exercise involving lying with your leg hanging off the bed helps too - thanks
