Hi Chris,
Good luck and they say if they work well they make a huge difference. One of my customers had hers done about 6 weeks ago and she is doing really well so I hope yours will make things much better for you. take care, Cris0 -

Thank you all for your kind words. I will report back with any news after the operation.
I had a big golf final yesterday and really struggled to play and walk the course so I am really looking forward to getting fit generally, and for getting my handicap down next year (I find it helps to set goals)

Thanks for your message Sue
I would be interested to know
Has it stopped all the "bad" symptoms you had?
Any downside to the op?
Did you have a general or local anaesthetic - any views?
How long did it take to full recovery?
How long before you could drive?
Anything else I should know?
A lot of questions I know, but the Consultant only gives the worst case senario and I want to get back to "normal" as a soon as possible
Thanks Sue

ok, i'll try my best, but to warn you although i still had pain after wards, i and my dr thinks it was due to the RA slowly creeping up on me because when i started on the ra meds the pain went very quickly.
as i say i had a few complications, but nothing to do with the op. anyway, before the op i had very little movement in my hip and it was very painful, i had OA in it due to an injury years before, after the op the movement was very much better, and i was very pleased i had it.
i had mine done with a general anaesthetic, at that time that was the only option. to be honest, having seen on tv someone having the op done, i'm glad i was asleep! sorry!!!
i stayed in hospital for 5 days, i could of stayed longer but chose to leave then as i had a young child. at hospital they get you up i think the next day (not 100% sure as it was a while ago!) i started off having to use a 'zimmer' frame, but soon moved on to crutches. i had to use a raised toilet seat, the o/t will sort things out probably before you have op as everything has to be raised, your bed, the chair you sit in etc, this as i say will be assesed by an o/t.
the pain whilst i was in hospital was controlled by by a morphine drip, which worked well, to be honest i found recovery less painful than i thought it would be. i had morphine tablets to take home to control pain then.
i was on crutches for about 6 weeks, 1st non weight bearing on operated hip then after a few weeks i progressed to weight bearing with crutches. i think i found it abit scary at 1st putting weight on it but it was fine once i did it!
i think it took a couple of months to feel 100% again, but every one is different.
i'm not sure if they still do the op the same way, as obviously things change, but i have a very long scar on my thigh, about 33cm long, but it's a very small price to pay as the op has improved my life, so i would say there are no real down sides at all.
i think i've answered most things but do tell if i haven't!!!
i looked up alot of information on the op before i had it, i'm the kind of person who wants to know everything! there is plenty of stuff online if you feel the need to read up!!
i don't drive so i'm not sure about driving after, sorry!
where are you having your op? sorry if thats nosey, just interested because when i had mine done not many hospitals did the op, i fact i've never spoken to anyone else who's had it done.
good luck and feel free to ask if theres anything else you'd like to know!

Sue thanks for such a great and comprehensive reply!
I am having my resuface done at the Chaucer hospital in Canterbury. I have got OA in both hips but the right one is giving the real trouble. I have felt bad with it since January and my Doctor said to have it done now as, In his words " it isn't going to get any better".
I am lucky that I can have it done quickly and if you knew how sorry I feel for those who are suffering much more than me !
I chatted to a fellow golfer who had it done a few years ago and said he was playing golf again after 4 weeks! I am not expecting that kind of result but .... who knows!!
Apparently know this is done with a very small incision and my consultant says that the sucess rate is 98% - well whatever, I cant put up with the nub thighs and the feeling of pulled muscles every time I move my leg
thanks to all of you for your replies and assistance0
