Hi, I'm new to all this and I suspect the answer to my question is probably on here somewhere but I haven't managed to find it.
Do any of the 'supplement' type things like cod liver oil, glucosamine etc. help at all with arthritis ?
I don't know if this will be of any help to any one, my problems only started relatively recently but I have found that wearing the type of industrial glove that are light weight cotton with some kind of rubber coating on the palm help a lot at work as I do not need to use as much pressure to grip tools etc.

Hi Wotsit!
Good to see you posting.
Those gloves could well be of use to some of us so thanks for that. Maybe you can give us a clue where to buy them - I know it's against the rules to put websites etc, but a clue might do...
As for taking supplements etc some swear by things like glucosamine etc, but I haven't found anything
You can do a search at the top of the page and see what popsup?
Warning - this can be very time consuming!
Take care

Hi Wotsit
Welcome to the site, sure you will enjoy it and get lots of help too.
I've taken cod liver oil and glucosamine for years and I do feel that it has helped, my Dr. thinks so too.

Hi there, Wotsit
I still take cod liver oil, capsule now but used to take it by the spoonful for yonks. Have stopped the gluco+ after taking it for years and did not see any difference, quite honestly. We are all different, a perfect example, Vonski and her doc think it has done good. Some swear by it. It is on script now too.......

Hi Wotsit
I went into Black Cherry Juice,
Rose Hip and
Glucosamine & Omega 3 together.
I have just used my second bottle of Black Cherry Juice and second jar of Rose Hip. All these have benefits for arthritis.
It is difficult to say just how much benefit I have got from taking these items, bearing in mind I have had my MTX increased and I am now on different drugs like Tramadol and Pregabelin. All this because my arthritis got worse.
I feel that any supplements like these may help and they do mix with my medication. However, I cannot afford about £52 a month to maintain the above. I went on line to Holland and Barratt.

Hello wotsit,
I`m a newbie too and the supplement thing well i do take these but really think that the food we eat plays a big role, i have found by eating oily fish daily helps arthritis A good book Invaluble to us all is THE ARTHRITIS COOK BOOK
Take care K0 -
Thanks for all that, I think I'll give some of them a try as the doc I have seen wasn't much help.
The gloves are called 'Gripz' I don't know where you buy them as I managed to scrounge quite a few pairs off some brickies who got them supplied but it's something I will have to look into soon as a pair only last me a couple of weeks.0 -
Yes, I too agree about the oily fish in your diet. eat lots of sardines, salmon etc.
I have heard that too much fish is not good if you have migraines. Anyone else suffered? My ex use to get violent migraines and of course, what do you cook when someone is feeling poorly after an attack. A light meal with fish in it. I was feeding him the wrong thing. He was taken into hospital whilst on holiday after 3 days very very poorly with migraine. Called doc who immed. sent him to hosp in ambulance. In hosp, just before release, he was told not to have any fish in his diet. Guess what they brought round for his meal that night. Yes you got it. Fish.

Hi, I don't take any, but I have had glucosamine, and I keep meaning to go back to taking it, although to be honest it didn't make any difference as far as I could tell. Love Sue0

devils, aren't they!!!!
seriously, they sent me a letter saying NICE has decided the benefits of glucosmine are to uncertain for arthritis, so have stopped my prescription for it. I am allowed to go back on it if I feel it is beneficial, but have never had much benefit from it.
I did spend some money a while back on rose hip capsules but they too are not effective. now, i am making a concerted efrt t lose weight, which takes some doing.
i make home made breas which s fabulous, and love lurpak butter. so one really has to get into the right frame of mind to lose weight. but so far so good, after some false starts.
I think a vegetarian diet is always best, stop eating meat, get some real food. all these supplements can be found in a regular vegetarian diet, all the antioxidants etc. fibre is vital for vitamin absorption from the gut and our stomach and if our gut and stomach feels good, we feel good also. no more indegestion!!!!
once the habit of eating small portions or of running on empty is made, it is easy. but we all love food.
I do normally take a vitamin tablet each day and must start this again. all the health supplements can be found in our diet , I eat homegrown carrots raw, grated in salads, and sometimes raw beetroot grated. delicious with mashed potatoes. i have also started eating cabbage raw, as an alternative to lettuce, with plenty if salad cream on again delicious with hot mashed potatoes. I think diet and exercise especially walking, do far more good for us than anything. an awful lot is in the mind. at least our ability to cope is.
I'm a a bit achey right now, the last two weeks have seen some often very long walks, six to eight miles, plus painting the outside of the house. Oh, get a walking pole, I swear by mine.
Most jobs are done now, and nature now forces me to rest so, one prepares for the winter . my house is cold then, but I keep at least one room warm, last winter was bad at times but one gets used to moaning and groaning a bit, as we get up out of the chair , with a smile. keep the tramadol handy though...soon spring will be back.....
best wishes,

No.
A general multi-vit supplement may aid general health if you are short on particular minerals/vitamins. Be careful on dosage as it is easy to overdose on them. Take one type and just the basic dose. You won't get any benefit by taking too many.

Hi, My husband takes a Multivitumin recommended by his GP. Thats because hes diabetic and has low thyriod (sp???) in his blood. His Gp said its probably because he dosn't eat vegatables or raw fruit. :? I've tried tying him to the chair until he's finished, but he just broke it!
But if you have a good diet, you should get the correct minaral content. It does worry me that he won't eat them, but he has tried and the feeling of them in in his mouth makes him sick. He likes tomato puree, which is good for you and things like that so I use those in the cooking as much as possible. He will also eat cooked fruit. Sorry I've gone off subject!e

have you tried making vegetable soup? puree it, and though i no longer eat meat, but I used to, try putting chicken in it to disguise the texture. eating meat all the time places you at high risk of colon/stomach cancer plus heart disease, just a thought,

Hi, Yes, thanks, he likes tomato, or mushroom, but not the proper vegtables. Its a worry, but hes been like from a child. Also the medication hes on means that dairy products, milk, cheese etc can't be tolerated in any quantity. He does eat pulses, though and cooked fruit. Thanks, love sue0
