High Blood Pressure and Arthritis

Hi all

I went to the docs today and my blood pressure was sky high. I was quite upset. I've been on meds for this as well as my OA for nearly 3 years. I blame it on my stupidity - I didn't take any of my co-dydramols yesterday and I expect it went up because I was in pain. I was trying out the vinegar and cider thing! I also decreased my amys from two to one a night! The amys were making me feel like a zombie and I was lifeless until noon. I've decided to start taking my amys a bit earlier and see how I feel. I used to take them at bedtime about 10.00 pm. I didn't admit any of this to my GP because I didn't make the connection until I got home!! She wants me back in on Monday for another test. I feel such an idiot maybe if I had stuck to my meds as prescribed my blood pressure would not have been so high (177 over something)!
I get myself in a tizz everytime I step into the surgery which doesn't help....I'm not good with docs etc - even though mine is lovely.

I'm worried now that the specialist won't even consider an op if my blood pressure is like this. I see him week after next.:cry::cry:

Has anyone with high blood pressure had a tkr? Advice welcome.

Sharmaine

Hi, I had a THR with high BP but it was well contolled. I think you could be right about the pain meds that would make your BP go up . I have probs with the Amy and only take it rarely now , I take it around 8pm and then I don't get the hangover next morning which makes me dopey till 10am.. Hopefully when you go back to the doc you will have a relatively normal BP..

It could be you suffer from 'White coat syndrome', my hubby does, so they got the nurse to take his BP when she had normal clothes on and believe it or not it worked... his BP was normal, maybe you could ask the nurse to do it for you.. worth a try anyway
Our worst times are always our best lessons.

Hi Sharmaine, have you got a bp monitor at home? If so take your bp twice a day at home till Monday, then if it lower show the doc so you can prove it was higher as a one off and you get stressed at docs.

Otherwise you will have to explain about the pain. Surely the op will help with the pain? I hope your appt goes well.

    Take care

Hi, I used to suffer from 'White Coat Syndrome', every time I went to the doctor my bp was quite high, so he suggested that I have a 24 hours monitor. Anyway, the out come was that, infact I have a normal low bp!!! Which made the GP laugh. He said if he hadn't had that he would have given me medication! Anyway it solved the problem, and now I have normal readings. Just shows what the mind can do. :)

I have heard that some pain medications can have that effect, but I don't know which ones. I hope you can feel nice and relaxed, get to the surgery in good time, and sit and rest before you go in!
    Take care love Sue

I know I suffer from white coat syndrome because when I'm at home my BP was never as high as it is when my GP does it!!! I had to wear this little machine thing for a week. In my formative years I was terrified of the docs one removed a deep wart from the inside of my palm without any anaethestic and with this horrid electrical scraping machine. I was only 12 but gave him a good slap much to my father's horror. Everytime I went they wanted to give me an injection hence my fear.

Anyway I have to go back on Monday to see the nurse and I'll explain my terror of doctors etc.

The amys make me so dopey - I take them mainly because my GP thinks it will help not only with my OA at night but also with my high blood pressure.

Thanks for replying. I'm going to be good and stick to my meds.

    Hi
I did go nice and early...read a couple of magazines etc. I've always had this dread of GPs surgeries!

I was upset yesterday because someone broke into my hubby's van and I also had a holiday from my co-dydramol (silly thing to do when I'm visiting the GP the next day). I've always been a bit of a worrier and I don't think it helps.

    Hi Sharmaine,

Sorry you have the bp thing. I had some sky high ones this week and then the next time it low again and well I think some of it is pain and fear...... The tablets we take can raise it and they can still bring it down with diff meds so hopefully it wont change the consultants view of an opp. They may just work to get it lower by the time the date comes up.

I have found mine very erratic at home and also a big difference between the 2 arms and well it does seem to be sent up by the appearance of either a white coat or blue uniform eh? Can you do the deep breathing and send your mind to a nice place when your in the doctors?

A ((( )))) and a hope if you take it at home quietly you will have a better idea what its really up to. Cris x

    Hi Skezier

I did try and relax, however, I've never been good with people I don't really know. I even have trouble making friends - those that I thought were friends in the past let me down and I've become wary. We've only recently moved to this area and it'll take years I suppose to meet people. I find some people used me or took advantage of my good nature. Saying that I've revealed more of myself on this site which is a good thing. I've been hurt a few times by so called friends and with friends like that who needs enemies. I must have a face that screams mug! Anyway that doesn't explain my bp rising!!! I'll have to learn to trust and have faith again.
I really appreciate your advice thanks for taking the time to respond.
    Regards

    Hi all

I had my blood pressure done twice today at the docs surgery and it was fine. So no more cider vinegar and honey for me. I will stick to my medication. I just wanted proof positive that the cider vinegar recipe worked - well it didn't. I was in pain all day and my blood pressure went sky high!

I feel so much better knowing that it's ok.
