Hi Everyone
Does any one drink on MTX ..... Not that I am at the moment...but have always enjoyed a glass of wine or two, particularly with dinner. Have only just started my MTX last week and gave up alcohol about 6 weeks ago in preparation, am quite happy not too at the moment but cant see me abstaining forever so wondered if all you lovely peeps could share your experiences with me.
Probably come to light today as just had dinner and my husband was having a nice cold glass of white wine...while all I had was 3 MTX!!!!!!
Love to you all....just taken 2nd dose...fingers crossed for another week free of side effects....

I think you will find that about 3 units a week is safe, better check with your rheumy nurse though.
Mine told me it was alright in small amounts. Never had any problems with my blood tests and I have been on mTX since 2006.
There are some very pleasant non alcoholic drinks at the moment and the other day we bought a very pleasant Rose from Aldi. It was only 7.5 vol. Most wines are about between 11 - 13 vol.
I treated myself to a Rum and Coke last night. It was great.

Hi, I agree I was told that I could have the odd glass, but not to drink to excess, I would check with your Rheumy nurse, failing that what about low alcohol wine? love Jaspercatxx0

Hi Barbara
This question comes up every now and again. If you do a search on here when you are logged in and type in 'methotrexate and alcohol' you will be able to read at least 3 -4 past threads on this very subject.
I do not take metho but I remember some people have the odd drink when out with friends and others abstain. It seems to be a very personal choice after weighing up the pros and cons.

Quite a few people have said that MTX and alcohol are OK in small amounts.
I have always had a bad reaction and the only real way to tell is to try it. If you have a small glass of wine well away from the MTX day you may be alright.
I used to get very ill and have several days in bed from the smallest amount, ie one tiny glass of wine = 4 days in bed. So, none at all for me. But the only way to find out is to try.

Hi! I too enjoyed a social drink, and like you completely gave up about 6 weeks before starting MTX. After so long I decided to 'risk' a spritzer
Glad to report I had no ill effects!
Since then, and with much advice, I now enjoy a couple of drinks maybe twice a week. My blood results are good, and I have no ill effects from enjoying the drink. Oh, and funnily enough and rather opposite of what Joseph has said, I usually have a couple of drinks on the evening before I take the MTX.
Incidentally, when I mentioned to my rheumy that I had thought of giving up alcohol altogether he laughed and said 'I wouldn't tell you to do that, thats too cruel'
So, I think as long as you feel ok, your blood/liver results are ok, and you drink sensibly (no bingeing) you'll be fine.
Cheers

HI,
I take MTX but also take other meds for which alcohol is totally not on.
like you I missed the occasional glass of wine, but I can hapily say that I have found that Sainsburys do a very palatable alcohol-free white wine and also an alcohol-free rose wine. I get to enjoy my tipple without the guilt!
incidentally, we recently served the 'wine' at a function we organised, and many of the guests were surprised that it was so pleasant. Pity I wasn't on commission for the supermarket!
whatever you decide - do remember to keep getting your bloods monitored to be safe on the MTX.0 -
Hi Wonkeylegs
Sorry to butt in can you tell me what it was called. I must'st drink alcohol because of my INR levels. But sounds as if it is nice.
I can add it to my shopping list online if you don't mind

Thank you all for your advice will talk to my rheumy when I see him in 3weeks. Maybe then I will be able to have the odd glass or two.
Hope everyone is feeling ok this morning.

Hi Barbara
So pleased to see your username has changed. The other one was rather long and presumably your email address which was not a good idea perhaps :?
Hope you are able to have the odd glass of vino and all is ok - cannot see why not.

Hello again Barbara
If you do have the odd glass of wine, try and have red.
Apparently white is not good for arthritis. Don't know why.
I like cidar quite a lot and I shall be getting my usual stock of Guinness in again this winter.
On MTX days, I drink a lot of water. This is also partly because I have to take Alendronic one day a week. So I take this on the same day at MTX. I find that if I drink a lot of water on this day it stops me feeling nauseous.
Anyway, I shall clink glasses with you tonight and wish you good cheer. Go on, have a glass of wine tonight. I shall.
hug

Thank you all so much for your replies..so good to know that life doesn't end with MTX. Its very iscolating not being able to join in, not that life revolves around alcohol but its nice to relax and be social.
