Having lost a fair bit of weight in the last few weeks (25lbs), and getting out of condition, I want to start exercising.
Got some dumbells so I've sorted out arms/shoulders (arther permitting). I've also got some ankle weights....what do I do with them?? (No...not there...They don't fit  )
What I want is to strenghten tummy muscles.....I tried situps, but they pull my hips to pieces...
Can anyone suggest an exercise to tighten tummy whislt not hurting hips??
Thanks...................... Rob x

hi u can just tighten and hold muscles then release, build them up slowly u can also lift legs straight toes pointed pushing back down into floor hold to count of 5 and build up do not do anything that causes pain and start low and build up what ever u do . if u do stomach remember to do back as well. good luck used to go keep fit twice a week and loved it these days can not even walk for half an hour with out pain so had to stop as was able to do less and less . hoping to get back to it when get sorted lolval0

Good morning Rob
You are going to get fit, with swimming, dumbells and weights Don't go overdoing it now?
Where the heck do you think you put the ankle weights - on your ankles, of course.
I would not dare suggest exercises for you to lose weight on your stomach due to your dodgy hips.
Wishing you the all the best in your new venture - another new venture! Don't forget your next swimming lesson!

Hi, I've used weights in the gym with an instructor. I used the 2kg weights one in each hand and used my tummy muscles and did a several different types of lift. Nothing hard! Its not really possilbe to tell you like this - its best to have an instructor or someone with much more experience than me. Be careful, don't hurt yourself! Do you have a friend who goes to the gym? Failing that, what about phoning physio they may help you, or asking at the docs surgery for someone trained who would be able to work out a programme for you. Good luck, take care Sue0

This sounds great ... and very positive.
I used to enjoy fell-walking and last year was using a treadmill to help with fitness. I am currently mid-flare (RA), rather sore (!) and have not been exercising for some months as a result. Would restarting some gentle work on the treadmill be helpful? What have folks found helpful when in this situation?

Might not be too good for the hips either because you rotate on them when hula hooping. So please take care if you try it!
I do a yoga class, it's a tupe called Dru Yoga it's very gentle and done in slow, balletic movements but boy does it work those muscles. There's a pose called the Plank which requires you to balance your body weight on your upper arms and toes while keeping your tummy taut and not sagging in the middle this really works your core muscles. Nearly everyone at my yoga class is retired, so not exactly in peak condition and quite a few have problems with knees, backs(me) and hips but still manage to work out. Yoga works best on building muscle strength and balance so is excellent for those of us who aren't able to jog or do heavy cardiovascular exercise. According to ARC (Arthritis Resaerch Campaign) research it is also good for pain and depression. Check it out.

Haha!
Thought you might like the suggestion!!!
Actually I have decided to investigate Tai Che as I have heard it is a very gentle way to exercise that slowly does give results. Maybe there is something llike that in your area?
Good luck with finding something suitable

I love to hoop! I do 15 minutes a day. It is no use trying with a kiddies hula hoop. It has to be an adult one and not too lightweight. There are hoops of different weights. The one I use was given to me and is quite light, ideally I would prefer a heavier one, but I have got used to it. I do not have a problem with my hips. I find it relaxing.
