Hi everyone, well had my 6 week post op checkup from my THR yesterday. I am pleased but surprised with my recovery. Didnt get to see the doctor, saw the senior nurse, who asked me lots of questions and I her, looked at scar, very good etc. " you can start back at work and wean yourself off crutches, cut down on your anti-imflammatory meds and get off walking/swimming/ gym as soon as you like" she said. Oh and I can drive again. Am I being cynical or is this a bit soon? I am weaning myself off the crutches and meds, but the advice she gave me conflicts with the NHS leaflet the hospital gave me. I think I will go at my own pace and not rush or I might end up back in hospital! As for work, Ive not been able to since I was told I needed a THR, as the job I had was in a clothes shop and involved lots of stairs. I have been out in the car though, strange but nice after being taxied about everywhere  I dont go back till next July for a checkup. Weird to think only a few weeks ago I was sat worrying about the op, now Im officially fit and able. They say so, I think a bit longer

You know your body better than anyone else so go at your own pace.
Can't believe it's 6 weeks gone ,just like that.
It is good to hear from folks with success stories so good on ya.

    Hi Ikesother
Your story should really help those about to have a THR shouldn't it? You were so worried and now look at you!!!
Lovely to drive again eh? that sense of freedom! Nothing like it!
As for the exercise etc I should do it at your own pace and listen to yor body - I really think you have to do that honestly.
    You have done brilliantly :)
    Take it steady

    Hi JK,

You are doing so well but like the others said listen to your body and take it easy so it mends as best as it can.

I can't belive its been 6 weeks, but I expect for you it feels like it has been. I really hope it continues to go well and I'm sure it will. take care and thanks for the up date...... some of us like to read it going well for THR's  Cris x

You are a good advert for the op. Keep up the good work. Hope you reply to future threads on here about THR and put all at their ease!

    Hi,

Glad to hear your recovery has been good. I got my thr in March and was on the crutches for six -seven weeks. I did not see my consultant till ten weeks post op, and he give me the go ahead then to drive but I think it was twelve weeks before I drove. For me three months post op was the turning point and things got easier. However whilst the consultant was saying get back to the gym etc physio was telling me to work on the strengthing exercises which I think was the correct thing as even now they are still weak and I am continuing with the exercises. I worked at my own pace which is prob a bit slower than others but I knew when I had done to much. As for work I went back after four months and even then physio did not want me to go back. I did go back on a phased return which was good as I still got tired quickly. I think you are right to do things at your own pace and not to force or rush it. Hope the rest of the recover goes well.
