hi ya peeps, just a question about painkillers ,as some of you know i have only recently been diagnosed with wear and tear arthur ,i just seem to be in pain all the time with this, the painkillers ie paracetamol+ dihydrocodeine 500/30 and naproxen 500mg just seem to take the edge off the pain ,they dont get rid of it totally, is this now what i have got to look forward to ,mood swings as well, citalopran for that,is this normal i seem to be having a flare up every 2-3 days then it settles down for 1-2 days and then starts off again, not just in the spine but feet as well, it is really starting to pee me off,i cant plan ahead my boss ,quite rightly keeps asking when i will be back ,i,m now down to half pay and i still can,t see the light at the end of the tunnel, holmesi ,

    Hiya Holmesi

Why don't you go back to your gp and tell him exactly what you have just told us. From what you are saying to us, the meds are not working and your gp should be sympathetic and go back to the drawing board with you and think again.

  I know you probably are not keen to go back to seek advice but if you do not the medics will not call on you to see how you are going on. If you keep pestering your gp he will see something is not right. If your gp is not sympathetic ask around in the surgery for a gp that specialises in OA. If none of them do, go see another gp and hope for the best. I know it is easy for me to sit here and type this but that is the only option I see open to you at this time.

I hope you get some help soon,

    Luv

I think with any of the pain control you will always have somr pain sensation. If i were to take enough painkiller to completely make my pain go away, I would be flat out asleep all day.

I swear by the Tens Machine. Ifind that helps me no end.
Have you been referred to the pain clinic yet? I am on Tramadol slow release pain killer and Pregabelin
If you are still struggkling you need to see your consultant again. Maybe you need cortisteroid or similar injection.
I think we are coming to the time of year approaching winter when we shall all be suffering more
    goodluck

hiya elna and joyful, yes i have told the gp this every time i see him but he says i am on high strength pain killers any way,i do realize if i go up in strength it will probaly knock me out.but just to be out of pain for a few days would be nice, pain clinic has started but they have stopped at the mo ,not enough customers, starts again next week, the pain management team said they would tweak the meds but have not done so at the mo,see doc next week so i will try for different meds,,holmesi

    Hi Ivor

Have any steroid injections been talked about with you? If not perhaps you could put that to them, either your gp or at the pain clinic. They are no miracle cure but can help for a time. Have physio and acupuncture been mentioned?

The cortisteroid injections or similar are injectedinto the muscle, not the joint. I think it is the joint that you can only have 3 times.
I seem to have the steroid injection into the muscle every time I go, which is about every 3 or 6 months.
I'm never really free of pain. If one area calms down, then another area starts hurting.
I've just used my TENS m/c on my lower back. Killing me. The pain subsided until I started climbing on chairs to put things back into my kitchen cupboards. The kitchen has been virtually gutted for 3 weeks, not it's putting back time. So, as they say, when you start feeling a lot of pain then you should rest it. Easier said than done.
