Thank you

    Hi Autumn Lady,

Not fingers but I have had my toes de-jointed and fused and well its made such a difference. It was done over 25 years ago now but I think it is simular? Good luck with it anyway and I hope you find it as beneficial as I have my toes. Take care Cris

    Hi Autumnlady

I have recently had some of my fingers fused. I will help you if I can. Do you know why they have said that? You can tell me on here or send a PM.

In the meanwhile do't worry too much.

    love trisher

    Thank you both.

I am having this done because the silicone joints I had put in when I was 17 (I am 53 now) have disintegrated.

Is there still mobility in the fingers or are they 'fixed' into position, i.e unable to bend at the joint (middle finger joint) after the surgery?

How long is the recovery period?

In your opinion have you benefited from this surgery? If so how

    Many thanks

    Chris

    Hi Cris,

I have very recently had some of my fingers fused. I am wheelchair bound, so I rely on my hands for transfering.

I was refered to a consultant hand surgeon. He saw how much I needed my hands to transfer. My fingers were no help at all to me.

He told me that he was going to make them into a claw shape and insert pins to hold them in position. This would enable me to grip.

I had them done under a local in each finger. (I have many serious medical conditions and can not have a GA.) They are in a cast at the moment.

I was told that the recovery period is 3 months. Your consultant is the only person who can tell you that. Our bodies can heal differently.

On my left hand I have fingers that are already deformed and can no longer bend at the middle joint

I can move those fingers at the knuckle so they move up and down, I can pick things up. It's no use because I need to grip. Iwill be having the same op. I will have benefited.

Pain wise not much compared to Authur. I had to spend 5 days in hospital, generally you go home a lot quicker.

The only one who can set your mind at rest is the surgeon. Can you phone his secretary and ask for another appointment. Write down all what you want to know, ask him the range of movement you can expect. Other than that ask your GP.

You can ask me anything and I will try and help you.You can always ring or email to the helpine, They are very helpful..

    luv trisher xx

Thank you for your reply Trisher. I am not worried about the surgery, I had two years of hand and finger surgery at Stoke Mandeville Hospital when I was much younger. I am more concerned as to how this will affect what limited movement I have already and will it help the pain I have. I was told that the joints I had put in back then should have been removed and replaced 10 years ago, the surgeon was surprised no one had offered me that option! Deformity I have no problem with, I have lived with deformed hands all my life, I have been unable to pick certain things up for years so really wondering if this surgery will improve that.

I see the surgeon again in November but am having an MRI scan before then, guess I will find out more then

Thank you again for the reply

    Hi Chris,

I know its not the same but my toe fusions were 6 weeks wired up and then the wires were removed and they have been so much better ever since and it was a long time ago. In my case the joints were removed, but they are toes and fingers may well be done differently. I only think the recovery time may be simular? Good luck though and Take care Cris

Does it hurt when the wires are removed? Am having nightmares thinking about that.
