Tramadol and Side Effects

Hi, On saturday I had severe pain in my right hand and wrist and decided to take a couple of Tramadol. The pain didn't ease so four hours later I took two more Tramadol.A few hours after than I started to get nausea and giddiness and was sick shortly afterwards. The rest of the day I felt awful, couldn't eat or drink,I just wanted to lie down.Even this morning I don't feel as well as I should.I wondered if anyone else had side effects after taking Tramadol and if so did they strill continue taking them? This is the first time I've ever had problems with my meds.Perhaps I took the two doses too close together but I though a four hour gap is usually the norm with pain killers. I may be of some use here. I started taking tramadol about one and a half years ago, whilst they certainly work, and stop most of the pain--i have osteo, both knees and hips-- I found i had exactly the same side effects as you have.
I felt quite dreadful it was only by following the advice of someone on this forum, that I continued taking and eventually I got so used to them i can get on with daily life. In fact, my osteo is bad at the moment and when I go shopping, this morning, am forced to take a tablet or else my hip gives me jolts of pain when I walk which can be embarrassing in public.
I also suspect they case mild sweating, but am not certain about this. If you take two as I once did, I was 'unconscious 'on the bed for an hour, but what a lovely feeling!!!
I suggest persevere with them, co codamal causes constipation, and tramadol seems to be quite safe for most people. just let your body get used to them. Juts take one tablet unless the pain is very severe, I find one occasionally makes life worth living again.
best wishes,

i used to take the full dose every day with no side effects what so ever but managed to stop taking them when i started humira.
re started them and just 1 made me sweat, red faced, itch all over, feel sick and wake frequently ive found the brand makes a difference just took them at night for a while untill i got used to them as they do wonders for the pain i also found they gave me a hangover feeling the next day initially.
my hubby was given 100mg at the hosp and passed out talking giberish we cut him down to 50 and he was still the same a nd wouldnt take them again. he cant believe i drive on them!!
speak to your gp though if it happens again but im sure you just took to much xx0 -
this may be of help, i take one 50mg tablet when the pain is bad, I can drive with care, and sometimes feel a bit sleepy, but I try to go with the effects, not try to stop them simply accept the feelings as part of my daily routine, just build them into your consciousness so to speak, and you will stop noticing them so much. It takes a while. i try not to take them but sadly osteo tells me otherwise.
my maximum does is, 2 tablets taken four times a day. that would put a horse to sleep!!!!! and I'm not in to euthanasia either!!!!salsal wrote:i used to take the full dose every day with no side effects what so ever but managed to stop taking them when i started humira.

Thank you for your replies. It seems the problems I had with it could be quite common.I have OA and RA and I did a silly thing on Friday,I lifted 12 stone stabs in the garden and the next day I had the severe hand and wrist pain.In fact,it was the worse hand pain I've ever had so resorted to Tramdol.I had only taken them once before and that was just one capsual on a couple of days.I do think taking two and then another two four hours later caused the nausea,I just felt so unwell.I must realise I can't lift heavy items anymore.Because my hands have been good lately,I thought I would be OK moving the slabs.Shows how wrong I was!! I take Hydroxy and didn't know if the Tramadol had reacted to them. Breane.0

I take them everyday for pain relief for RA..
I find that you get much less side affects if i take them with a meal...
Like you sometimes i feel giddy and sick...
They also make me itch like mad....
If i take them before bed...My mind goes round and round and i have really strange dreams.....
BUT they do help with the pain...so i continue taking them

Hi, I was given one tablet in hospital after my hip replacement and was very sick so was not given anymore. I know some people who can take them and some cant. For me anything stronger than codeine does not agree.0

Hi I take tramadol and when I started taking them my GP warned me they may make me sick and if they did to ask for anti-sickness meds.
When I took the first dose, I felt a be queasy, but I wasn't sick, I kept taking them and I don't notice anything now, it seems to have settled very well. But we are all different and our side effects are different, but don't worry about it, go and see if you can get some anti-sickness medication if you want to try again!
Hope you make a full recovery soon, love Sue0 -
hi breane,
I take tramadol along with lots of other meds and anti sickness tabs and also paracetamol the feeling sick and dizzy seems to go quickly now but sometimes when it just wont go i have a banana and a glass of milk and that seems to work for me but as everyone has said it just takes a little getting used too and may not suit you sometime i think you just have to weigh it all up and deside whats right for you. I really hated being physically sick so its a big thing for me but if i dont take all the meds including tramadol then the pain is just too much. hope your feeling better sooner rather than later lots of hugs CB xx0
