Some people on this forum have had tatoos whilst onMTX so I should think it is okay to have false nails.I want to have false eyelashes put on,now you have got me thinking....should I check first?

Hi
i dont know if mxt affects it but be careful as a mate of mine has thin nails and had false ones put on and they filed too much of her nail and she got an infection which then made her real nail fall off
it did grow back but took ages.

This is the first I've heard of being careful what to put on your skin if you're on MTX?! I've been on it since around June time and no one's mentioned it to me at the hospital?
What else should I be careful of?

I had false nails for years and they were great but wasn't on MTX at the time, cant see how they would be a problem to you but maybe call your rheumy nurse and ask....No one has mentioned to me any do's and donts about MTX (except alcohol) so would be really interested if anyone has any info on this.

Hi Louise
Can't answer your question regarding false nails. I have OA and not RA.
My nails used to be soft, peel and break really easily and I used to cover them up with nail polish. I decided to stop as I could almost feel the nail varnish seeping through my nails and it was making my the skin underneath burn. After a month - I was amazed how strong my nails had become. They never peel or break now (4 years later) and are really strong. I can only ascertain that it was the harsh chemicals in nail varnish that had been destroying the fabric of my nails. I will never use nail varnish again. Like you I used to have false nails now and again but keeping it up was not only time consuming but expensive. I am so proud of my nails now!
I used to hide them and I hated people looking at my hands now I flash them about!!
I just thought I would share this with you. I understand that having nice hands makes you feel confident.
I'm certainly going to have a go at those false eyelashes!!!
With regards
Sharmaine
PS I wanted to add that the false/gel nails made my nails worse and it took a long time for them to recover. I'm glad I persevered and stopped using these damaging products.0 -
Hiya,
Had acryllics applied when I was on methotrexate the problem I had was that the first one peeled off within 24 hours and the last one lasted 3 days! Bloody expensive for how long they lasted looked good though!0 -

You have to be extra careful cos of risk of infection with our lower immunity.
Nina,
I didnt realise about tattoos until it was mentioned on the forum.I was only told about certain foods which couldnt be eaten.I still have all my piercings, they only come out for ops and x-rays.

Hi - when I could afford having a back rub every now and then (cant spell word for it!!!) the lady said she had to change the oil she used as it could make me poorly??!! Also, the info i was given said that even natural tablets etc you have to check with doctor or pharmasits as they could react with methx! I hope I am not alarming anyone, just going by advice I have been given!!!0 -
Hi everyone
Thanks for replies!! I was hoping that no one had heard of any problems or issues with false nails and meds, but wanted to check!! The dam stuff has given me horrid side effects in other ways and sometimes it is so nice to be able to do something for myselfe that makes me feel a bit special and nice!!!! It is expensive, but my sister in law is doing qualification in false nails, so needs lots of hands to practice on!!!!!!!!!!!
False eyelashes is a complety different matter - not sure if I could do that so close to the eye??!!
Thanks again

When I was on MTX I didn't have any trouble with my gels. When I was on sulpha they did go yellow when I went on holiday so I'd recommend darker ones for those on sulpha if you're going in the sun.0

My nails are absolute rubbish.
I got them really good for my son's wedding and had them done with varnish, but as soon as I put varnish, nail strengthener anything, they start going all horrible again and pitted. That's the fun of having PA.
