Hi!
My husband has been on various meds for his RA for over the last few years and just started methotrexate (4th dose this week) - but it makes him feel awful (sick, nausea and tired). He takes it on a Fri night, and is on folic acid two days later....... any ideas or things others have tried that might help him to feel better?
I'm trying comfort food this week but am sure there must be better ways!!
All ideas appreciated!!
Thanks Joejo x

    HI
sorry to hear your hubby isnt doing well with MTX.

It seems to vary from rheumys as I take 5mg folic acid for
6 days a week, i.e. every day except the MTX day.

Maybe your hubby could enquire about this as the folic acid helps
    absorb the MTX.

    Hi
there are a few threads on here about this.
i now have folic acid 4 days a week and split my metho dose take half sun eve other half mon eve.
also take metho in middle of meal so eat half dinner then take tabs then finish dinner.
the rhuemy can also give your husband anti sick tabs.
these are all surgestions people on here gave me and the sickness has got alot better :D i do still feel "spaced out" abit for a day or 2 after the metho, does your husband get this?
i also get more tired the day after the metho dont know if anything can be done about that.
i hope it settles down for your husband and that he gets some benifit from it.

    Hi,

I felt pretty dreadful when I started taking methotraxote so switched to injections which have made a great difference. It might also settle down as he's only been taking it for a short time. I've have a word with the rhemy nurse the next time you go.

    Hi

I have been on methrx since Feb - tablets 1st then onto inje in April as suffered from nausa for 5 days out of 7!!!! I have been on anit-sick tablets from the start, tried different things and even with injec was still suffering from nausa!! Things have improved now as I start the anti-sick tablets from Fri eve - till Mon eve and do my injec on Sat eve!! I have been advised to take them like this to get the tablets into my system before the nausa sets in!!! This works really well!! You can suck lollies, especially ice lollies when feeling nausa, but can make you put on weight!!! Folic acid tablets do help - I take them for 5 days then not on day of injec or day after??!!!

Unfortunalty, it can take a while to get into your system and work and I think every one is different with side effects but if really unsure then get back to the hospital or doctors and talk to them - hopefully they are helpfull?? Mine have been brill!!!

Hope this helps - keep in touch!

Sorry to hear your Husband is having problems with the methotrexate. When I started taking them I felt nauseated too but it's been much better since I gave in and started taking the metoclopramide (anti sickness) my GP gave me. It's worth perservering with the tablets as I'm on them nearly 3 months now and my body is getting used to them. The tiredness does last but gets less in my humble opinion. It would be worth going to the GP to get some anti sickness tablets and trying to take rest when needed. Very best of luck

    Hi JoeJo

My Rheummy advised taking MTX last thing at night but It didnt really help me.I was then given MTX by injection but this didnt help me either so have returned to taking tablets. Now I just comfort eat...cake....cake and more cake.I cant drink tea either so swap to coffee instead on MTX day.I also find orange juice and blackcurrant juice help relieve the sickness sometimes.
    Take care Tkachev

I have been on mtx for 8 yrs. I can still remember how it made me feel. Just keep going as afer some time (about 6 weeks I recall) it got better. Now I find it has no bad effect at all. I take folic acid every day except the day I take mtx.
Just hang on and keep going.
