I've been booked into the 'Balance' clinic at my surgery. Got to find something that will help me loose weight. Ask the dr for a tummy tuck but she said the present health care trust won't pay for that in our area.
Awful how these people hold the life and death issues in their hands. Have you heard about the poor guy in Colchester I believe who cannot get a bowell cancer drug because he lives just 4 miles the wrong way, yet another patient who lived the right side of the border got the drug. That chap in Colchester will probably die now.
I need to lose 6 stone if possible. When I explained to the gp about the pressure I was putting on my joints by being overweight, she agreed, but said that the NHS wouldn't fund the op.
The balance clinic are able to give out drugs to help get rid of the weight. So here goes. wish me luck

I will wish you luck Joy.Losing weight sounds easy but is extremely difficult.Ever since going on MTX I have gained weight and cannot really excersise too much ,although I have started to walk more since my THR.
Dont put yourself under too much stress as it can make you feel bad about yourself.
Take care and I wish you well

    Hi Joy

I don't know if this will help but my Dr has put me on Redactil. I have a bit more weight to loose than you but i have been on these for 6 weeks now and lost just over half a stone. I still really have to think about what i'm eating but they seem to be doing the trick! Also personally i think just the fact that my DR is weighing me every 6-8 weeks is helping as i know someone is checking up on me!

    Hi Joy,

There is a tablet out there my Rumo is waiting for that does eating and smoking. I don't know what its called but I really must remember to talk to him about it.

Its a struggle with the bones cus we can't do the exercises very well but I am sure you will get there and I do wish you all the luck and come and tell us how its going as well.

One thing more..... I left you a thing about pregabalin on the cafe thread and here is another. My pain doctor recons they make you feel more hungry and you may be eating more. Me I just don't eat properly but I do have to loose weight as you say it would help the bones. You can do it Joy and I really do wish so much luck Cris x

Maybe those who are interested could start their own thread to 'check up on each other'! :P That way you have the support from those who understand and if you have to post your weight each week it might help with the motivation. I've seen them on netmums for losing the mummy tummy and I see no reason why it wouldn't work here. Everyone has the same difficulties with exercise and pain so it might be a better support group than places like slimming clubs.
    Just a thought. :)

    Hi there

They say that for every pound you are overweight it adds 5 pounds pressure to your joints, so even if you are only slightly overweight it can have a horrendous effect on your arthur. I have lost 1 1/2 stones over the past year and it HAS improved things tremendously and I was still within the safe range before I lost it, so just imagine how it would benefit those who are slighty larger. What a relief!!

Hi Jo. The nurse put me on exercise on prescription which meant that you got to go to a ymca gym and pay 1.50 per session. They have a special person who does your plan then they review you over 12 weeks and at the end you get to join 4 a discount. Only pay 20 pound a month used to pay double that.

Hello, It would be good if loosing weight were as easy as putting it on! :( With help, should be easier for you, having something or someone to answer to would make me better at not picking!
Its hard, when you can't do as much exercise as you'd like.
Wishing you lots of luck! :) Love Sue

Hi. I go along with that. Perhaps we ought to start a slimming club at the cafe!!
For a start, I weigh 16st.8lb am now 5'2". Seem to have lost 2 inches in height. Before I was pregnant with my daughter, 40 years ago now, I weighed 10st 2lb. afterwards 11st 2lb then after my son was born I went up to 13st. So if I can get down to that again I will be happy
see you in the morning. got busy day tomorrow.

I would say to make sure that you lose it gradually .... as you are more likely to keep the weight off that way!

I have only ever managed to lose weight two ways .... the first one was following a well-known low fat diet plan and the other (ie what we are doing now) is by eating much more fruit and veg and a lot less meat & eating smaller portions. seems to be working. slowly

my downfall is that when I feel bad and do less, I eat more, but if I can keep my mind and hands busy then I think about food less.

also I would say don't get hung up on what they say you SHOULD weigh (rather negative), but on how much less you DO weigh - positive all the way then :D:D

    good luck!!

i would def agree with the last post! When i'm haing a bad day, not so much with pain but feeling sorry for myself, that's when i just grab whatever snacks i can. I think even without arthur, people are a bit like that, they comfort eat.

As for not concentrating on what you should weigh, i must say my Dr is very good there. I am currently 20st 5 and should be around 9.5st but my Dr is just aiming to help me get to 13st. As he said, any weight loss, even 1lb is 1lb less on my painful joints!
