Am I the only one that hates the flippin clocks going back then forwards each dam autum and spring, and does anyone really know why they still do?, I've been told it's school kids in Scotland and also it was during the war when the farmers needed more light due to black out if so WHY THE HELL DO WE STILL DO IT!!, if they need more light then why can't they just get up an hour earlier in the morning, same for the school kids in Scotland GO TO SCHOOL AN HOUR EARLIER and don't make the other 58 million of us get up with you for Gods sake, and if that's still no good move south, it's not my fault you live up there!. :x
Right rant over it's over to you guys. :D

I agree it does seem quite pointless especially as I'm the one who has to change all the clocks in the house  .....still as Pollyanna would probably say I'm really looking forward to my extra hour in bed on Sunday.

and try explaining the extra hour to a hungry dog who doesn't understand that 6 o'clock one day becomes 5 o'clock the next!

it will take her weeks to get back into the routine again.

Yes, I have to agree that it does seem pointless changing the clocks every year. We don't seem to get that much more daylight anyway, don't you think?

As an aside, we're still trying to convince dad that the clocks go back THIS weekend, not next weekend... good job my brother's driving them to the airport on Sunday really... :-)

William Willett first proposed the idea of British Summer Time in 1907 in a pamphlet entitled 'The Waste of Daylight'. Willett had noticed that the summer mornings light was wasted while people slept, and that the time would be better utilised in the afternoon by putting the clocks forward. After campaigning for years the British Government finally adopted the system a year after Willett's death.

When do other countries change their clocks?

European Union - Most countries change their clocks on the last Sundays of March and October.

As above, we are not allowed to cancel by the EU.

Surely being 'told' by the EU we can't change it, it a good enough reason to do exactly the opposite.......

I know it's difficult for pets to understand but is it really that big a deal? As someone who lives in Scotland I haven't heard anyone moan about it or make a fuss.

If it ever changes I don't see a migration of people from Scotland moving south!

Getting up earlier would not solve the problem for Scots kids as it's even darker then. I live in Scotland and go to school there too ( as a teacher) and it's always dark when I leave for school in the winter and always dark when I come home even if I leave at the same time as the kids. The problem is that because of the gloom children are more likely to be involved in accidents due to not being seen by car drivers both early in the mornings and in the afternoons. Personally I wouldn't mind a 10 o'clock start cause then I wouldn't have to get up at 6.30 in the freezing cold and dark. Put the clocks forward permanently I say!!!

    Hi everyone,

I can remember one year when I was at school (yes, I have a very good memory!) and, as an experiment, the clocks weren't changed. In the morning it seemed to be dark for ages.

And as for Christmas, Carol!! I can't stand it. I'm not mean, and don't grudge anyone anything, I just think it's so commercialised and the true spirit and meaning disappeared years ago. I just think about the kids whose parents can't afford to buy them much, or whose parents just don't bother because money is needed for drugs or booze. Then there's the lonely ones who don't have anybody and elderly people who have families who never bother with them. .................Then in January there's the realisation of all the money you spent!!

Hope I haven't depressed you all!!

So much for everyone telling me that I'll get an extra hour tonight, I've got a 3 year old who can't tell the time let alone understand British summer time. It's just like the pets, they'll still be up at the same time. Then again, she doesn't let me sleep much anyway so what difference will it make! :D

Pheebs, i do understand totally where you are coming from on the christmas front. For me, it's all about spending a lovely, fun day with my family as me and my husband visit my parents and both my brothers still live 'at home'.

Christmas has changed. When i was a child (i'm 34) both my brothers and i were happy with whatever we were given. We always got gifts but never had a lot spent on us. Don't get me wrong, my parents aren't rich, but it wasn't so much that they couldn't afford it, it was so we learnt that you can't always have what you want. If we wanted something that was more expensive, either we had to share it, or we were given some money towards it and had to save up to get what it was we wanted. We never felt as if we went without as christmas was always a fun, family time. I am very greatful for my upbringing as it clearly taught me that if you want things, you have to work for them. These days it seems that if it doesn't cost a fortune, the kids don't want it. As i'm not a parent myself (i'm a step mum to teenagers though) i'm not sure if it's down to the parents giving in too easily of the pressure from the media.

    Hi Carol,

I must sound like some "Bah Humbug" type person - I'm not that bad, I promise. I did enjoy Christmas when my boys were little and believed in Santa. We had a coal fire and they used to put their letters up the chimney (under supervision!!) - it was great fun. But they were never over indulged and neither was I as a child.

I just think the world in general has gone a bit mad.

So, this year as always, I'll buy gifts, be given nice gifts in return, sort out the dinner and have a nice day. Then start moaning about the New Year!!

Hope you have a nice time over the festive period.

at least someone has found a use for the LHC :lol::lol:

Cris - I know what you mean about remembering how to add/subtract hours on various machines ....... we have a bi-annual hunt for all the instruction books but usually resort to guess work - hope you worked itout!
