I want to buy a new laptop for my son christmas/birthday present. He really just likes you tube but also watches his videos from his flip camera. My OH reckons we should get one of the netbooks instead of a laptop. What is the difference and which would be better for children(ie tougher with clear pictures).
I am spending aroun £400
Cheers Elizabeth

This one is excellent value from PC World. It is great for You Tube or MSN etc.

The geeks question of the moment.
Firstly, netbooks are far smaller than laptops. Sounds an obvious comment? Not so!
If the computer is used in mainly one place then a laptop is better with its larger screen. If on the move a lot, then a netbook.
Windows 7 is a must have.
Netbooks have a much smaller screen so information is less visible and you need to scroll more to see the information. You can't do a lot of typing on a netbook as the keyboards are much smaller.
As long as you appreciate the netbook is essentially for communications rather than processing and storage, and you’re OK with a smaller screen.
Whatever you get, make sure that it has the largest Disk Drive that you can afford and yes, it will fill up. Early computers had Disk Drives of 8Gb, now 48Gb is often used for programs/data. Put photos and music on and some video and it can get crowded.
On board WiFi is a must.
You should be aware that netbooks don't offer fantastic performance compared to their larger counterparts. Don't expect them to run 3D games or be fantastic multitasking devices.
If you require high performance in a small package, then a more powerful ultra-portable laptop may fit the bill in more ways than one. It's your call?
Look for price reductions and free extras. No optical drive? Haggle for one within the price. Shop around, it's the same stuff in the box.
Buy a computer as if you were buying a car. Is it comfortable to use? Will it have the extras you need? Will it upgrade? What extras are available? Get loads of leaflets and sit back and read, but don't believe all the hype.
Ultimately, it is your decision as to what you buy. Given above is what I would look for, but it may not suit you.

Hi Elizabeth
I asked my son about this, he's at uni doing computer science and he says he wouldn't recommend netbook, doesn't have enough power to multitask! He says Dell Insperon 15 or to order and collect Curry's have a good one and I'll PM you the link.

I have both a net book and laptop (and desktop but not the point) as I'm married to a software engineer! I actually much prefer the laptop and rarely use the net book. I don't take it anywhere as I work from home. My main gripes are that there is no disk drive in the netbook which has caused me no end of trouble and means that I put things on my laptop first and then transfer it over the network. Not the most efficient way of doing things!! The other big problem for me is that the screen is far too small and I seem to spend all my time scrolling up and down pages (and side to side) which makes my hand ache. I think netbooks are useful if you travel a lot like commuting to work on the train but apart from that I think we wasted our money.
It is worth saying that you can get compact laptops which is what I've usually done and they weigh a lot less. I used to carry one 3 miles to work each day so I got a light weight Toshiba and I loved it. This is kind of a compromise between laptops and netbooks because it is smaller but still has all the advantages of a laptop.0 -
I have just bumped this up as I have nearly made my decision and I have to keep searching through the forum for this link so it makes things easier for me.
Cheers

Bumped it up for Trisher,
Just to let you know I got a laptop for my son.I ordered a Dell cost £443 and it arrived on 8th December. It is great for my son and he has it already because with 3 children fighting over the 2 laptops we had I couldnt stand the argueing.Unfortunately this old laptop is sticking and causing me lots of probs with posting on this forum.
Trish if you need something lighter I would say a netbook would be ideal.
Best wishes

I got an early pressie from Santa last week. An Acer netbook from Tesco of all places. It's brill. My old laptop was an Acer so I've kind of replaced what I had. It was about £200 because it had some money off it.
I'm really pleased with it, it's got xp which is fine and took me and my Dad no time at all to set it up with the wireless conection.
I've found the keyboard a bit annoying because my old laptop was a widescreen and so the keyboard was massive but I'm getting used to it.

Meeee, busy??? Not really, I read more on the forum than I post. I finished my Masters so I’ll be expecting you to call me by my full title!
Glad you’re doing well and feeling better. I thought you’d resigned and then came back? We’ll have to discuss it further when I see you.
I stopped gigging a while ago because I had to have my knee replaced although I did fill in for my mate a few months ago somewhere in Harbourne, actually some woman did heckle me, was it you?0
