Update on my TKR dilemma

You might remember that I have been trying to decide about whether to have a TKR.
Today was my appointment with the consultant, and it went really well. He sent me for lots of X-rays of my hips and knees, and then gave me an injection for bursitis in my hip. The good news is that I haven't got OA in my hip, as I thought it could be, just bursitis.
Then he said that he doesn't think I need a TKR yet, and wants to sort out my hip because it is causing me to limp. So basically, he has made the decision for me at the moment, and I feel like a ton weight has been lifted off my shoulders. It just shows that you shouldn't worry and anticipate problems.
Thank you to all those people who supported me when I was getting in a bit of a state about the dilemma, especially Ange, who gave me excellent advice.

Hi Joan
You must be relieved! What is bursitis? Are you now on the waiting list to have your hip replaced? I bet you are delighted it's not your knees and having someone make the decision for you helps!
I'm on the waiting list to have one of my knees done hopefully within the next 8 weeks - they may call me sooner.
Take care.

Hi Joan
What good news, you can stop worrying now. Hope the injection kicks in soon and helps with the pain. Will you have to have more?

Hi Sharmaine
Bursitis is a type of inflammation of the joint, and it is very painful, which is why I was worried. However, There is no arthritis, so I don't need a hip op. I have got OA in my knees, and I was told last year that it was severe in my left one and could have gone on the waiting list then. However, I wanted more time to think, and today was the review. The consultant thinks I am doing OK at the moment regards the knee, but wants to sort out my hip pain.
I hope everything will go well for you when the time arrives.

Hi Vonski
Thank you for your reply. It is a new kind of injection, so I hope so too. I've had the usual steroid ones before without success. I've got to go back in 6 weeks and might need another. That's just before Christmas, so it would be the best present to have a pain free hip.

Dear Joan
You got all worked up about having a TKR - did they show you the xrays of your knee? They showed me mine and I could see that I had no joint left in my knee and it was hanging on a thread on the other leg.
It was a good job you had time to 'think'! You'll be disco dancing when your hip is sorted!

You'll be able to sleep tonight, Joan, not even the fireworks will keep you awake!
Glad you had such a satisfactory outcome - you must be so relieved and happy.

hi Joan
That is good news that you don`t need any surgery. A relief for you I`m sure. I hope the injection does the trick for your hip.

All the best with the injection(s) and no doubt you will be dancing along with the best of them in all the festivities leading up to christmas! I bet your husband was very relieved too.

Thank you all for your good wishes.
My consultant is such a good doctor. He was very caring and thorough in his approach, as he knew how worried I was about making up my mind. He had a student with him, and I was thinking what a good role model he was for a student.
I might still need a TKR in the future if the pain gets worse, or the joint deteriorates further. But for now, he thinks I'm better carrying on as I am. He will keep on reviewing it every 6 months. I feel in safe hands with him, so I'm not going to worry.

Hello,
I'm glad to hear your news, it must be great to know that you don't need surgery yet and your hip is being treated without surgery. I had that a few years ago and had an injection, which sorted it out compleatly. Love Sue0 -
Hi Joan
At least the panic is over now and it's good that you have a consultant that you can trust and feel safe with. No need to rush now.

Hi Joan. Like you, I went for my Rheumy appointment today aswell and I have had an injection in my left hip. As you know, I have bursitis aswell. It is so painful isn't it.
So glad that you do not have OA. I must admit, this has been on my mind also.
He didn't look at my right hip, not this time.
He also told me to increase my steroids from 2.5 mg to 5mg. If the pains in my arms, shoulders and thighs doesn't improve or the injection in my hip help, I'm to ring him and he will see me asap.
It looks as though my Polymyalgeria has flared up again so if the steroids don't help settle it down, I may have to increase my dose again. I hope not.
Anyway, I'm pleased for you. But if you are feeling anything like I am at the moment then poor you.
I can't sleep for the pain.
