Methotrexate and antibiotics

I was always told that if I had to be put on ABX I should not take MTX until the infection had cleared. There seems very little point in taking the ABX if you're going to take an immunosupressant and give the infectiona stronger hold.

Hi Alan
Hello stranger! I am sorry to hear you are not too good at the moment. I do not take metho but having read lots of posts on here it is not really on to take both at the same time. I know that Wonky has problems because she gets infections and has to stop the metho.
Hopefully she may see your posting and have some helpful advice.
I do hope you feel much better soon.
Luv

Hi Alan
Sorry you're badly right now and I can't help but if no one comes up with an answer how about ringing NHS direct for advice, or a chemist might be able to help.
Take care.

Sorry to hear you are'nt well. I'm sure your GP should know the answer no? I know there are some anti biotics you cannot take when on methotrexate but I did'nt realise you couldnt take any. I'd give your surgery a ring and see what they say. I'd be interested to know too. Hope you feel better soon whatever they say.

Thanks a lot for your replies, I may miss one injection and see how it goes. It seems a bit long not having an injection for 2 weeks, but at the end of the day, needs must. Thanks again. alanmancunian.
HI,
sorry not to see this earlier .... been a busy day here
I am sorry to say that I ahve always been told by my rheumatology nurse that if I am taking antibiotics then I have to miss my MTX injections until I am off the antibiotics and the infection is clear, their reasoning being (as scattered said) that your body is fighting the infection hard, but if you take the MTX it makes your body have to work even harder.
I have missed 6 out of the last 7 weeks injectionsbut have still been able to take the ibuprofen and have been taking much more co-codamol than I usually need to do. It hasn't been fun but I am still here
It is not easy to miss them I know, and to be honest there have been timew when I thought oh what the **** let's just do it , but then, like last week when I was not quite better but we did the injection .... the only person who suffers in the end is me with another infection
Hopeyou are soon infection free. Eat as well as you can, with as much fresh fruit and veg etc and I am sure that helps to shorten the bad times.
Also rest when you need to rather than keeping going if you can ... it all helps to shorten the time off the MTX.0 -
Hi everyone
I was put on antibiotics for a virus infection and it was a 5 day course. So the first day was a Thursday and I finished the course on the Monday. Therefore it was OK to have my MTX injection on the Tuesday, my normal day. Therefore, if you have a 7 day course, you would need to miss out one weeks MTX. Just check it out with your Rheumy Nurse.
If you are continually getting chest infections and colds, then I would seriously consider changing from dairy products to soya.
Ordinary milk builds up the mucis in your sinuses and they then become blocked with infections. If you can keep these sinuses clear then you will breath easier also. I have been on a dairy free diet for awhile now and always had Bronchial Bronchitis twice a year and now, I maybe get one slight infection a year now.
You should find a big difference within a month or two.

That's interesting about the soya joyful. I will file it away for future reference.0

Hi all, I had no idea that you shouldnt take the mxt if on antibiotics, I have just finished a course of amoxillin for a chest infection, and no one told me not to take my dose of mxt as usual.
My GP is aware of my being on mxt.
The rheumy clinic has never mentioned anything about antibiotics, my last appt was September, and my next is January, so not getting any advice there. My GP is trying to get me an earlier appt as still not feeling any better since July.
I still have a bad cough, so maybe its due to this too. Well, at least I know for another time.
Does everyone find the rheumy people unhelpful? The nurses dont help either, and I just get told to wait and see. Getting very fed up now, Jay0 -
alanmancurian, It does seem odd that you have been on antibiotics for so long, never heard of that, but perhaps someone else has.0

Yes I have heard of some people being on anti biotics for long long times. Some folk who've had types of blood cancer are on Septrin 3 times a week for years to protect against a type of pneumonia. Some folk who've had their spleen removed are on penicillin V for the rest of their lives. I'm sure there are lots more but of course it's down to the Dr.
hope this helps
