Has anyone else had this in affected areas of RA? The tip of my bug toe is numb! The ball of that big toe on my foot is REALLY swollen and I have been hobbling around for a few weeks now but this is a new thing for me so I'm a little concerned.I have other joints on my finger and toes that are affected but not as prominent and no loss of feeling in them, I just wondered if any one out there can shed some light please?
Thanks x

Hi Tam,
I can get a loss of sensation in my right foot where my ankle's fixed depending on how long I've been weight bearing and what footwear I have on. Don't know whether it's the same thing as you but that's the only place I have it.

Even though you have no feeling, it should still be pinkish. If not then you need urgent attention to it as the blood flow has been cut off.
Could be that the swelling is trapping a nerve and stopping the impulses getting through. If it is still numb after the swelling goes down, then you need to see the doc because if you damage it you won't know.

Hi, Sounds like you may need some urgent attention. It could be a nerve trapped or a circulation thing, but I'm no doc! I wouldn't let it go on very long at all. Good luck, Love Sue0

Hi Tam
Oooh!
I can't feel bits of my rt foot since nerve damage from my back, so it COULD be that. As Joseph said though check the colour of it incase its'the blood not getting through.
He is also right about damaging bits you can't feel. I trod on a drwing pin once and only found out because of the blood so it COULD well have got infected.

Hiya!
Pain in the big toe joint is common in patients with arthritis. I have it - badly - from time to time, but it comes and goes. Of course the other likely diagnosis is gout - which is also pretty common. They are both quite disabling.
If the pain responds to non-steroidal pain meds, such as Brufen/Paracetamol/Naproxen etc, then it will almost certainly be arthritic pain, but if it does not respond, you may need medicating separately for gout (where the pain is caused by the deposit of excess uric acid crystals in the joint). So you may need assessment by your GP. (They're on £100,000, so do let them earn it...).0 -
Hi,
The big toe on my right foot is numb too.
Before RA was diagnosed I had a really bad back so saw a osteopath a few times. After a coule of visits my right big toe had gone numb..... I told her about it and she waid it was probably nerve damage or something like that.
Also just above my left knee is an area about 3" diameter that is numb too (I first noticed that when I couldn't feel the hot water on it when I had a shower). She also told me what that was, but I can't remember
However, as 12 months later I was diagnosed with RA I wonder if its all related. Especially the numb area above my knee, because that seems worse on days when the knee is swollen up.
I too was wondering if other folk suffered with 'numb' areas!0 -
I have Raynaud's in addition to AS etc and often can't feel my toes. I wonder whether it's something along those lines....
Just a thought
Good luck getting to the bottom of it, I hope you find an answer and feel better soon.

thanks everyone, I still have got it so will talk with my rheumy nurse tomorrow! Maybe she can offer some advice and some light on the situation, I don't think it's gout tho as I don't fit any of the classic reasons for getting gout. Will check back when I have a diagnosis. Thanks again xxxEnergy is eternal delight.

Hi, I'm sorry about the foot pain, I get pain in my big toe joint and have done since my twenties, long time ago
. I also have oa in the lumber spine so it could be conected??? But it is a horrible pain, isn't it, and I feel so sorry for anyone getting it. I'm sure you are careful about your shoes, but I find that even the flatest most sensible looking shoe, makes the joint worse if it has a seam or the leather is hard. Even trainers, if a seam comes across the joint or the sole is thick and not bendy in the right place. Have you noticed that it is worse with certain shoes? Anyway, thats how mine works, but yours could be compleatly different!
