Soya instead of cows milk

I really believe in changing cows milk for soya. It might take some getting use to, but for many, including myself, I cannot tolerate cows milks at all now.
My grandson was dangerously ill when he was 2 with pneumonia. He was always poorly with running mucus the whole time. The same went for my grand daughter. My daughter then put them on a soya diet and since then, no problems. You should see him now. 7 years old and taller than his sibling who is 3 years older.
For myself, an asthma sufferer aswell, going on soya improved my breathing and I do not get attacks anymore.
I don't get my twice yearly Bronchitis, maybe a bit of a cold. The occasional virus, but not as bad as I use to be. I do have problems with my sinuses from time to time, but then I take a look at what I have eaten and yes, it has contained dairy, like cheese. I just love cheese. Now that I am on a strict diet to lose weight, I shall leave cheese completely out.
I am not trying to sell Soya to you, the choice is yours. I just wanted to put down how it has affected me.

regards everyone

joy

I'm asthmatic too, Joy and I agree entirely regarding dairy, but don't forget you need a certain amount of calcium. If little dairy foods are eaten, a supplement may be necessary (I've got osteoporosis, too, and get my supplements prescribed for me).

Unfortunately I can't take soya, so I use rice milk instead, avoid cheese, and save the small amount of cows milk I can have to go in my tea - can't do without my cuppa!
Rice milk is a lovely cold drink in the summer, but I use it on cereal, in porridge (hubby's never noticed) and for cooking generally where small amounts of milk are usually used.

The one I buy comes in several different flavours and I can't make up my mind which one I like best! Have to keep sampling them......

If I have too much dairy I come out in a rash so I mostly drink soya and rice milk and love them both!I also have soya yoghurts but when it comes to cheese i have to go for the real thing - love it!

It was a shame when i was growing up because my Dad worked at a dairy and would bring home loads of nice stuff - all I could do was look at it !

Somewhere along the line I have heard that Chinese people don't drink milk and that when the women are being catty about western women one of their insults is to say they smell like sour milk, apparently they can smell it on our skin  .... who knows!

My nephew, who is nearly the same age as me, had a very tummy problem and was really ill for some weeks, he had lots of tests and in the end they tested him for allergies and he is allergic to cows milk, which he used to drink a lot of. Now he has to have dairy free diet and be very careful, even buying special pasta! Any mistake and hes back on steroids! Its a serious condition of the bowel, but didn't show up until he was in his 20s. He gets soya substitute for everything, even ice cream! The condition does have a name, but I can't remember it. Some people do find dairy products don't suit them, and cause serious allergic reactions and maybe arthritis, RA especially is one of them. Its worth a try at comming off diaryfood for a while. I don't like much milk and dairy foods so its not hard for me, although I do have some! :) Love Sue

That's really interesting, I must mention it to my Daughter when she next visits as my youngest Grandaughter is always having one chest complaint after another, she's only 1 and 1/2 yrs old wee pet, perhaps soya would be good for her instead of cows milk on her cereal at least. Nobody in the house smokes or anything. Worth a try.

I wondered what sort of response I would get back. I don't want anyone thinking I was preaching to them. It may seem that way and, if so, I apologise.

I have tried rice milk and really loved it. I did use it for quite awhile, can be an expensive substitute.
There is quite a lot of calcium in Soya Milk now. I also take calcium substitute and will probably increase it because now I am on a strict diet I am having to cut out a lot of bread and there is a lot of calcium in bread. I believe cabbage is good for calcium intake as is spinage. I will have to investigate.
I like the idea of dairy free icecream. It is hard to find it though
Woodbon. I'm not sure that you can give infants soya. My grandson started having it after 3 I believe. Asthma seems to run in the family as my son's 3 boys seem afflicted also. My daughter was really bad when she was a child.
DIL won't change to soya and would rather they take their medication. It's her choice. I do not push anything on anybody, even family.

That's interesting. I don't like regular milk and have soya milk on my cereal. I have mild asthma and noticed I haven't been wheezing as much. Plus, it's much tastier than regular milk! :D

Rice milk comes in several different flavours........I like the hazelnut one, but can't always get it. The vanilla is fine, though.

    Hi,

    Also, for your info,

Ladies in particular, soy is useful for hot flushes, all kinds of soy products on the market. It was suggested by me GP. His only comment was that it should not be used in infants or young boys because of the high levels of oestrogen, but at my age that was not a factor.

There are burgers, yogurts and puddings as well. You can make smoothies as well. I do notice a difference if there are days when I miss the soy out do to travel or illness.

Just something else to think about.

    Regards,
    Rose
