Good Day,
I am wriring this on behalf of my wife. Two years ago she had a bad fall, landing heavily on her knees. Since then she has been in pain which increases with activity during the day. It is also sore to the touch. We have been seen by Doctors who have gone through several theories. On the lates visit she was told "Arthritis" live with it and maybe later an knee operation. I have some Arthritis in my knees and was thinking that I do not wince when someone touches
my knees and a couple of other people questioned said the same.
Would be obliged for any thoughts on the subject.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Does your wife have trouble with standing up and sitting down.Does she have trouble with the stairs? If she is in lots of pain she needs to get some medication from her G.P.Some knee pain comes from inflammation and some medication can relieve this and thus the pain we be much less.Sounds like you will have to keep on at your G.P.
Hope this helps a little.Others on here will be knowledgable I hope.
Best wishes

Hi JD,
sorry your wife is suffering with her knees for such a long time! sounds like she received very heartless advice from the medics....did they do a full range of tests? bloods, x-rays etc... what diagnosis did they give?
it's really not good enough to be given the label 'arthritis' without being told what type of arthritis it is, and, what treatment can be offered.
What about pain relief and other meds...you haven't said whether anything has been offered?
I'm no doctor but if someone winces when they are touched, usually means something needs attention!
I would suggest speaking to GP again, discuss your concerns about the way your wife has been treated by the medics and ask for a full range of tests in order to get a proper diagnosis. Once you have that, you can begin to access the correct treatment and support.

Hi JD same sort of thing happened to me kept on going to GP with really sore painful knees for a few years kept on being told it was gout (which I get) so I carried on until I could take no more and in desperation book into s a Doctor who wasn’t my normal GP(he was on leave) well he took one look at me and sent me for an MRI followed by surgery and low and behold they found bad OA of both patella, bottom line is go and see another doctor if you are allowed to do so at your local surgery no one should have to put up with pain and bad health care what do you pay your stamp for?.
A foot note to this story I went back to my old GP post op and he was a useless as ever so I changed to the one who diagnosed my problem, did it by e mail took all of an hour.0 -
Thank you for your replies. We started off with ,bruising rest it then moved on to you need Physio then you have Arthritis to no you dont you may have a Meniscal tear then it was Bursitis the it was Tendonitis then back to Arthritis. She was given a steroid injection and told she may need a course of them. On the return visit we saw a different Doctor who flicked through her notes asked if the injection had made any difference to which we said no but we were of the belief that it may take more than one injection. He said no point you have Arthritis it is just a sign of age(59), just take painkillers. It was a few days after that I thought about the knee being sore to touch unlike mine. As I said she had an accident and was fine prior to the fall. She has had MRI and x-rays done but the Docs are running with Arthritis - coild be damage caused by the fall or Trauma induced who knows !

have you thought of ringing the Arthritis helplines people? (free number at top of this page) they all have arthritis and are great at helping with advice on how to approach GP's and what questions to ask.
They could also send you some advice info which is very helpful.
good luck!0
