Hi everyone,
I am new to this site, and still finding my way round, give me a year and I will get there.
Anyway I have OA in multiple joints, this may sound silly, but has anyone had pain in there ribs.
I am getting it on my left side, and it is more annoying than painful.
Can anyone help.
Thankyou Barbara.
Love
Barbara

    Hi Barbara,

You are not silly in thinking you have pain in your ribs. I have AS and I always have a sore sternum however when I flare up my ribs on both sides and front and back play up.

I thought I was going crazy when it first started happening but my Rheumy was not at all suprised.

I hope you can find some relief.

Hello Barbara, Like Arna i too have Ankylosing Spondylitis a form of RA. I know that in our case AS affects the ribs but hopefully yours is not connected to arthritis if it is i am sure your doctors will know through tests and your pain will ease with the correct medication.

Glad I am not the only one. I find it starts in the area of the liver and then moves round to the back and then back again. When I mentioned it to my Rheumy Nurse, she didn't seem to have an answer, so now I know.

I have OA, I have'nt had the rib problem, but I have heard of it. It sounds really nasty and I know that if I do get any pains in that region, I think straight away I'm going to have heart attack! I hope that the pain settles down a bit for you. It may be worth telling your doc, when you see them again, give them the full picture and allow them to check it out.

I don't think I have 'talked to you before, I hope you're glad you have joined, there are some lovely, suportive people on this forum and you usually find someone who has been through the same experience as you and will offer you help or put your mind at rest.

    Hi

I'm the same as Legs and Elizabeth too. Mine hurts to breath and move but in addition its also my sternum and collar bones. The collars just now are so sore and even a t-shirt hurts them but it does seem to pass and I just asume its part of the bone thing. Hope you soon feel better though. Take care Cris

    Hi Joy,

Yes, it's a pretty unexpected thing to have happen, arthur has been full of surprises for me.

Just a couple of months ago I left a concert because the music/vibrations/bass were hurting my chest so much, it was bizare. As soon as I was out of the venue I felt much better.

I have since had problems with loud music at home and have mentioned it to my Rheumy - he said although noone has mentioned music to be a particular problem lots of people have problems with vibrations too.

Made me feel much better just knowing I wasn't 'the only one' with weird things happening :)

Hope you are on good form

    A x

Just bumping this post up as I am having problems with rib pain today.

On Sunday morning I thought it was just because I had laboured to do the shopping pushing my trolley through the snow. Yesterday it was better, but today it is really sore when I touch my side (between ribs) and also when I cough and/or take a really deep breath.

not sure if it is a flare (feeling rough but not that bad) and it is sore even though I am taking lots of co-codamol :(

will be at the surgery tomorrow for MTX but might not get it if I am feeling rough ..... just keeping fingers crossed it is not a side effect of the Leflunomide

Hi, I've had pain in/under my ribs on the right side. Was told this was caused by a fatty liver from steroids. Apparently, it swells up a bit and can hurt. Was told to go on low fat/low sugar diet today by gp - it has been v bad over past couple of days. Was told it would take about a year to go down after I stop the stds. Don't know if that helps or not.

Hi Barbara .. I am new and finding my way around ... I have multiple joint problems ... I have arthritis in all of my spine ... what I wanted to say is, my GP treated my left rib area as costocondritis ... but when I went to the orthopaedic doctors they said it was spondylosis ... I had been suffering it for such a long time and I only get some relief since I gave up working due to illness .. as I can lay down when ever now and try to keep it under some control... I needed to lay flat on the floor in so much pain... I find pain meds do not completely take away the pain I find moving before it gets to bad is the most helpful…

Hi another one here who suffered from painful ribs and that awful pain when breathing!!! I had all these before I was diagnosed with RA. Since being diagnosed and on treatment for my RA those pains don't happen as frequently but they really are horrible pains.
Hope you get some relief soon

hello...i have RA and i have rib pain...its part of RA...its a condition called something like...costa***itis??...sorry the name escapes me but its when the muscles and tendons etc inbetween each rib gets inflamed. you get pain when you breath in and expand your chest cavity.
apparently the treatment for the condition is the same as what we are already on...anti inflames, steriods etc. it will settle down for short periods but once you get it once...it tends to raise it ugly head with every new flare.
    hope this helps :D

    Hi,

I'm luck not to have the server rib pain many of you seem to suffer with, but I do find that my lower ribs are very tender to the touch, especially at the sides, and I have patches either side of my spine and at the back of my shoulders like this too. Feels a bit like they're bruised, though they're not. Does any one else have these, or have any suggestions as to what causes them please? I have OA all aver the place, but as these pains aren't in joints I don't know if they're connected with it, or something else :?

    Hi Naomi,

This sounds just the same as the rib pain I get with flares but mine is higher up and hurts to breathe (as I said earlier, sorry) .....there are never any bruises though. I'm sure what Wobbly says is correct.

Oh my god, thanks guys! I have had this, even ended up in A&E when collapsed due to the pain once but no one has ever been able to say what is wrong. A&E docs said was pulled muscle, GP said was because I wasn't moving much and the muscles needed me to stretch, and I had read on internet that steroids could cause muscle spasms. But you have all just described what I have experienced - severe pain starting in bottom of ribs on right hand side, going up to my collar bone and can't breathe.

It's so reassuring that I'm not the only one.
