Hi

Today I visited Walsall New Art Gallery, and saw a painting in an exhibition there by our own Joseph ( Livinglegend )

It was just as brilliant as I expected it would be. It was a painting on a large canvas of a ship in the mist, entitled Morning on Skye/ Out of the Mist.

It was painted in a very atmospheric way, so that you really could almost feel the cold damp weather, and the ship took on a rather ghostly appearance, emerging from the mist.

Joseph had added to the overall effect by his clever brush work, and he left a space around the edges of the picture instead of filling the whole canvas. This made the subject of the painting stand out more and was a clever touch.

While I was there, a couple came along and the man was on crutches. We got talking, and he said that he was recovering from a TKR operation. They had come to see his wife's pictures in the exhibition. I told him about A. Care and this site, which they hadn't heard of. I also felt proud to say I knew Joseph when they looked at his picture.

They said they would look at the forum when they got home, so welcome, John and Yvonne, if you read this.

WELL DONE, JOSEPH !!!

A picture is worth a thousand words. The original is a large 80cm X 60cm.

Updated: Out of the Mist is now part of an online slideshow at: http://www.greatwyrley.org.uk/paintings.aspx

    Hi Toni

The New Art Gallery at Walsall is really excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit yesterday. I haven't been before, but I will be going again because there is so much to see.

It is a very modern building, and there is a very interesting permanent exhibition, the Garman Ryan collection, which is a collection of art made by two women between the 1950s and the 1970s. It is a superb collection of art, one of the best I've seen.

The photo Joseph hs posted on here of his painting doesn't do full justice to it, of course. You can't tell the size on here. It is a big canvas, and also the brush strokes don't show in a photo, but you can get a good idea. Good, isn't it :?: :?: It was for sale, and I nearly bought it. Wish I could do as well :!:

When looking at a scene I spend time just looking at the way things are reflected. Covering up the actual scene by holding up a hand and just looking at reflections in glass or water, gives you a view of something that you wouldn't normally concentrate on.

Ultimately as with any skill, its knowledge plus practice.

Thank you all for the positive comments. I hope to put more pictures online soon and will post on here when they are available.

The exhibition at Walsall New Art Gallery is open until the 10th January 2010.

I agree with you to a point, but inspiration and talent come into it somewhere too, I think !!

I would love to see some more of your work.
