Hi all,
haven't been around much lately not been having a very good time of it really.
Anyway, people at work have been dropping like flies with one bug or another particularly of the upset tummy kind  !! Well my stomach (rather than tummy) has been giving me some jip the last few weeks-feeling like I've got constant heartburn or indigestion. It got so bad last weekend that twice on Sunday night I woke up retching and with an awful taste of bile in my mouth. On Monday morning the pain got really bad so much so I got an emergency appointment at my GP's. Sadly it wasn't my Doctor but a locum I saw. She was very nice and asked all the relevant questions and after examining me and having a bit of a prod and then peeling me off the ceiling (yes Doctor that did hurt!!!), she gave me the news that I'm 'cooking' an ulcer!!! This has probably been caused by all the meds I'm taking for the RA. She sent me away with a prescription and the advice that if I see any signs of bleeding I was to go back to the surgery!!!- If I do see any signs of bleeding I'll go to the hospital!!!
Well the tablets she gave me are helping but there was no other advice given about foods to avoid etc. So if any of you have suffered similar could you let me know of anything I can and can't eat!!! I usually have a fairly good diet with plenty of fruit and veg. Most stuff I eat is low fat and not too spicy. My one vice is my cups of tea and I wonder if switching to decaf would be of any help.
I know that I should try to change my lifestyle but I can't really give up my job now (my greatest source of stress!!). My RA restricts my ability to exercise (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!). I don't drink or smoke and I try to get plenty of rest.
Any advice would be gratefully accepted.
Thanks.

Hi
I cannot think of much but would advise not to eat acidy stuff or drink it.
If you like beetroot and eat it remember it is easily forgotton until you start seeing red and thinking your bleeding so don't eat it until you are better.
Sometimes when you bleed it can look like coffee grounds not always as red blood.
Hope you feel better soon

I've been there, too Kate; trouble is we are all individual and what suits one won't suit another. Trish is right about avoiding spicy food, I found also that I had to avoid processed food (sausages, some ham, and things like pork pies, etc).
There are some things I have found very useful and good - live yoghourt for one, taken on an empty stomach and with a teaspoonful of honey.
Ginger and cinnamon are good for me even though they are considered spices. (It's a good thing I like them).
You might have to find that you need to avoid citrus fruits, apples and tomatoes.
It's really a question of trial and error.

Hello, If you don't feel better soon, go back to your GP! Some pain medications can cause ulcers and you need to say something if you have a problem. They are easy to cure with medication these days, no need for hospital or diets.
I may be wildly wrong but it dosn't hurt to just ask the doc, I had an ulcer that perforated and I needed emergancy surgery. The reason, I had not bothered about the symptoms, and just put them down to a busy life with meals grabbed or missed! I would'nt do that again! Love Sue0 -
Hi Kate,
I was planning to Pm you but have given you some space cos of the recent death of your much loved Godmother.I am sure that has added to your recent stress.
Have you been advised to cut down any medication. At my last appt in November they said they wanted me off of Ibuprofen but didnt give me any advice on how or when.So I have halved my dose.
The iboprofen must have been responsible for my frequent stomach runs(!) apologies!!Everyone else seems to get constipation.
I drink caffine free tea but not sure if it is causing me the headaches I have been getting cos they stopped when I ran out of the tea but started again as soon as I got more.It might be a coincidence. The tea tastes lovely it is Roobibush or something spelt similarly, also tick tock tea bags.
I have a brother in law who has an ulcer I will ask him about what foods to eat/avoid and get back to you.
Best wishes

Thanks for all your responses and yes Elizabeth I think you certainly have a point regarding my Godmothers untimely passing -the stress has been extraordinary!!!!
I do take Diclofenac but because a couple of years ago it gave me stomach problems I started taking it via suppository (not nice but hey it works!!). The GP thought that may have something to do with it but I always thought that any medicine taken "that" way was done so to bypass the stomach. I have spoken to a friend of mine who is medically trained and she thinks that Diclo taken that way shouldn't cause any upset. I suppose I'll just have to wait and see- With a bit of luck the meds will work and I won't need to have further investigations done!!
Thanks also for the tip about things looking like coffee grounds I'll keep that one in mind.
Kate
Elizabeth I'm going to send you a pm xx0 -
Hi Kate
nice to see you posting but sorry to hear youre not good. Its seems coincidential but i have been having stomach/right rib problems that a vaguely similiar to yours! my is pain right side under ribs, like stitch, burning feeling, then goes to my back and also top of stomach like burning. it got so bad i thought i shuld go to hospital one night, have had a scan. when i think about it,mine started when stress at work was causing problems, like yours also accompanying stress.
Have you any tests? ive had an ultrasound and am waiting results.
i hope you get yours sorted soon,take care0 -
HI, i REally would advise anyone who has indigestion type symptoms or odd pains to get them properly checked out. I ignored my symptoms of indigesion, slight nausia, pain in my shoulder, which turned out to be referred pain from my duodenum (sp?). I ended up with peritonitis. I don't want to scare anyone, but if I'd checked things out I could have had a short course of treatment, acid reduction medication and anti-boitics and I would have been fine. It would'nt even have ment any time off work!
I am fine now, but can't take any anti-inflamatories, even supositories or cream are too risky now. :? Makes treating my OA much harder!
Love Sue
PS I just want to say how sorry I am for your recent loss. The stress of that must be causing you problems. xxxx0 -
hi kate,
i'm also suffering terrible acid indigestion at the moment. as i type i have the horrible sicky feeling and nasty acid taste in my throat. the only thing that really helps is mint tea.
it does seem to really make a difference.
i had this under control until i started new anti imflams recently, then the indigestion kicked of again. i was given stomache protectors which helped but now they seem to have stopped working so maybe i need my dose upeed?
but i'll be watching this post as it is horrible feeling like this.
good luck and i hope you get some relief soon.

Hi Kate
What meds are you on? The co-dydramol meds can give you heartburn. I have a hiatus hernia so I take Ramprezole I think many people take something else Omeprazole (not sure of the spelling). See you own GP for a second opinion if you're not happy.
Take care.

Hi Sharmaine,
I take steroids daily (dose often changes anything from 7.5mg to 30mg), Lisinapril 10mg (blood pressure), co-codamol daily, diclofenac suppositories daily, a calcium tablet (twice daily), the pill!!!( wish I had the energy to do what it was originally prescribed for!!) nortriptyline 50mg daily and Anti TNF injections (etanercept) once a week. Now I'm on these tablets to help my stomach Lansoprazole 30mg daily- I need a degree to be able to pronounce the names let alone know what they are for!!!
Things seem to be settling down a bit but I've found that food isn't causing to much trouble but work which is extremely busy at the moment is really setting it off. So I'm sure that it is purely stress related.
I'm a great believer in your body 'telling' you when to slow down and I think mine is now screaming at me to do that. All I keep thinking is just a few more days until Christmas Eve and then I can start to relax and be stressed by the kind of stress I like-i.e. looking after my family.
Thanks to everyone for their pm's and good wishes.
