I have just started a thread 'What's the worst Winter you can remember?'
For me it was 58, 63, 76 and 77 and 83. I have a Fiat 126 in 1983 and was driving through 3 to 4 ft drifts visiting Dad in hospital in Northampton, then back to Mum in Kettering General with both my children still at school and split from my first husband. What a bad time that was for me.
And now, they are saying this is the worst winter for 101 years!!!!

Hi Joy I remember one winter in the 1980's when the temperature got down into the -20's here it was so cold our cars would not start as the oil was like parafin wax, it took me 2 day's to clear all the ice and snow off the sloping driveway and even then it took hours to warm the engine and charge the battery enough so the dam thing worked, boy it was cold you could feel your breath freezing on the hairs of your nose when you breathed out. I couldn't get to work at Harwell and those who did get in were stuck for a few day's yet I still got a ticking off for not attending work and had to write a letter of explanation to the head of section even though he didn't get in either!. :?0

I can only remember the summer of 76 being exceptional.I think it snowed Christmas 1970 and I got a new bike and insisted on going out to learn to ride without stabilisers.
I was born at the tail end of snow 1963 so mum had to struggle up the nearby hill to the shops with her bump.

That winter in the fiat on your onw sounded really bad Joy - still you lived to tell the tale eh?

Hi, I think that 1983 must be the worst for me, although this time is catching up the worst, I was living in Enfield at the time, I got on a bus to go home and it was so foggy that the bus couldn't go any further. Had to walk home in thick fog and freezing conditions for several miles, couldn't see a thing, cold through and through when I reached home.
To top it all off a power cut, so couldn't get warm for a couple of hours love Jaspercatxx0 -
I'm only 32 (nearly 33 though!) so can't remember snow like all this (and certainly not the ice age). But the year I was born, my dad is fond of telling me there was 5 feet of snow.
I do remember white christmases though and piles of snow everywhere where it had fallen off rooftops. We opened our front door one day when I was little and I remember just seeing this wall of snow until my mum slammed the door shut to stop it sliding in :-)
I've enjoyed reading your posts though :-) And yes, I do remember life before central heating and double glazing before anyone asks!

Actually it snowed when I moved in Jan 87.Brand new house needed coal for the heating but couldnt get out to get any.
Ex husbands dad carried several bags of heavy coal down the hill for us.
Also snowed when we moved in April 91 but not too heavy cos we travelled from Sussex to Bucks and made it safelyBut remember thinking deja-vu.

I don't remember the ice age either!
I do remember travelling through snow mid March when my eldest was born 2 and half months early up to stoke on trent and back. That year 1995 was a BRILLIANT summer! remember?

I remember it was 80 something as i and my little brother were in primary scholl and my big brother had to come from the secondry school to get us and my little brother disappeared as he fell in a hole that had filled with snow. I also remember going ice fishing with my dad at the harbour years ago. It was great0

I remember the '58 one - walking to school, no big deal, most of us did that anyway, round trip about 7.5 miles, but on the way was a frozen pond - guess who fell in!
The '63 one was much the same, nothing could move on the roads and I walked to work this time, about 10 miles round trip mostly in the dark - it was lovely, the snow was packed down hard and I could walk on top easily. There were lots of people doing the same and it was fun!
Then came the early 80's - one year I had toothache and had to go and have a tooth out, it broke while I was under the ether and the dentist couldn't deal with it, had to go to Roehampton Hospital and have it seen to. All this in about 3 feet of snow! This was 3 days before Christmas; they said they would admit me, but I had 2 small children at home, so I asked if they would do it with a local, they did, but never will I do that again. I spent that Christmas with a mouth full of stitches and couldn't eat a thing!
Couldn't do any of it now!

I'd like some snow. the schools are closed because of it so it would be quite nice to have some. It's just damp here by the sea in Wales and very cold so snow would be much better especially if the schools are going to be closed whether we have any or not - grandson and I could at least go to the park and throw snowballs,
Starting to feel like a grumpy old woman, I can remember taking my kids to school in Yorkshire in the early 80s on a sledge, through knee deep snow - and it was open!
