Hi there, I have just been diagnosed with Osteoartritis of the right hip. I have had this problem for 15 months now and at first my doctor diagnosed me as having hip bursitus. Had physio for several months but it didn't help that much. My physiotherapist then decided i should see a specialist physio , which i did and she decided i needed to perhaps have a scan. I did a specialist at the hospital who gace me a cortisone injection into the hip, which didn't help either so he sent for an MRI Scan which confirmed Osteoarthritis. I was really shocked when they told me as i am only 45 years old.
I have been limping very slightly for the past 15 months since i had this problem and now i am wondering whether the hip will get worse over time.
Does anyone else suffer from this, if so, what do you do to help yourself, eg exercises or diet perhaps or even pills from the health shop.

Thank you for reading. :D

Hi! Sure others will be along later who can help you more but wanted to say hello. I have osteoarthritis in my right hip too - I'm 32. Unfortunately it is one of a number of joints affected. Have you been given any advice on anti inflammatories or anything like that? I find that helps with some of the stiffness. Maintaining a healthy weight helps (am working on that one post-Christmas! ) and gentle exercise such as swimming. Heat or cold help some people also - personally I find a warm wheatbag helps best. Hope this helps a bit, as I said, I'm sure others will add more! Best wishes, Josie

    Hi
I too have OA in both hips and most of my other joints, I always keep myself mobile I dont sit for very long because I find that more painful when I get up, when you get to the point that you need help for your pain go see your gp and get some pain relief and anti imflamitories. excersising is good (when you can) keeps you more supple and flexable. some people swear by gloucosamine from the health shop I tried it but it didnt seem to do anything for me.
Good luck with it all I am sure you will get loads and loads of advise off this website.
    take care
    Denise.

Hi Josie, I hope I am using this site correctly. Sorry to hear you have it also and you are so much younger than me too.
I haven't seen the doctor yet about taking any anti-inflammatories. I'm already on loads of pills because of other health issues so I don't really want to take anything just yet unless my hip gets a lot worse. I would rather try something from the health shop actually.
I'm not over weight, and i have just started a strict diet plan, no more junk foods.
I might try what you said with the warm heat pads, sounds like a good idea, should help anyway.
I do have my good days and bad days with my hip, i do find that it aches more in the mornings when i wake up. Strange really as you would expect it to be ok after you have rested all night.
    Thanks for your reply.

Hi Denise, thanks for your reply. Must be quite painful for you having OA in both hips, I find it tough just having it in the one.
I am doing some exercises but i find it a little bit painful if i am not careful on what i do. Our dog is on gloucosamine tablets, seems to be doing him some good so i might try them, don't work for everyone i suppose do they?
    thanks again for your reply..

    Hello Babalicious
Welcome to the site. Osteoarthritis (wear and tear) is one of the most common problems for most people.
I was diagnosed with bursitis of my left hip about 18 months ago. In that time I have had 3 injections, the last one did not have any affect. On my last visit to my gp he said that he couldn't do anymore for me re the pain. I was already on high dose Tramadol S R and I was reluctant to take any more. When I suggested going to a Chiropractioner he agreed that it would be more beneficial than an osteopath, which would be more ruthless on the joints. I have to add that, at this point, I would do anything to take the pain away from my back and hip. I could hardly walk. My right hip had started hurting aswell. I felt that I needed a stick in each hand. I have been for 5 sessions so far and I must admit, I do feel stronger. I am not taking any more meds than I need to do and I feel far more relaxed, insomuch as I feel incredibly tired and just want to sleep now. I'm not saying everyone should go down this road, but the Chiro told me that OA was more susceptible to Chiropractic sessions than other forms of arthritis . You should have a word with your GP and also, ask for a referral to an Occupational Therapst. You could probably benefit from having a stick. It helps to take pressure off your hip when you walk. Without support you are putting more pressure on other muscles and ligaments. I am 20 years older than you. You are not alone with having arthritis in your 40s. there are people far younger than you on this forum as you will find out. Do hope you find some relief soon . Good luck again
    Joy

Hello, I have OA in my hips, and other places as well. I know its something we think that only elderly people get, but its far from the truth. I am 54, and I've had mine for a few years, although I don't need surgery yet, it is painful.

I'm sure you will get some replies from people your age and younger who have the same problems you have. Its a lot to take in, but, I'm sure that with time, you will be able to find some treatment that helps you. People can cope well for a lot of years with these problems, if they take the right advice and treatment. Good luck, I'm glad you've come to this forum, its a very good place! :D Love Sue

    Hello,

I also have OA in both hips as well as FAI, i'm 39. Last summer I had open hip surgery on my right hip for the FAI which has saved the joitg for a while but will still need a THR n the next few years.

I have been lucky I have a great GP and consultant and they take the pain management seriously. It has had a huge impact on my life as I can't do as much as I used to. But you learn to cope, good days and bad days.

This forum has been brilliant for me over the last year.

    hi
i have suspected osteoarthritis in my hip. It has completely shocked me as im 28 ( it shouldnt really as i was diagnoised with RA in hands and feet 2 years ago)

It started with pain in my hip after trying to loose weight (actually lost 5 and a half stone and still going!) and ended up in them saying i have a deformed hip joint, basically looks like it was broken at some point but they think it was when i was growing up!!! They now think there is OA in there as iam in terrible pain. Having an MRI scan on sunday (yes i know bloody 8am on a sunday!) and was wondering what that shows?
    Sorry to hijack your post!!!
