I had a bad experience the other day! Whilst sitting with my 10 year old son on his new laptop the screen was suddenly invaded by porn.No joke.Security cut in but just froze the images on my screen and we couldnt delete them until son pressed off button!
The laptop is new and never had a problem like this before with any computer.
Son was more upset by losing his classic car website he was looking at but the whole episode has upset me, mostly cos images just sat there frozen on the screen!
Any advice on what went wrong and how I should have dealt with it?

Is the laptop brand new? Or bought slightly second hand? If second hand, it might be worth installing the start up software again so it starts off again as a brand new computer.

We have the AVG software on our home PC. It's free to download from their website and free to run and very effective at keeping pop ups and stuff like this at bay.

You could also try ringing the helpline for the security software?

Its brand new Nina.I have downloaded some security that came with laptop.Security cut in to stop images but missed the initial start which was really disappointing!Whats the point of security if it fails to work quickly.

What sort of anti virus and fire wall have you got on it at the mo!?, also you will need to delete all you tracking coookies and temperary internet files, sounds like you could do with an update on your anti virus followed by a full scan, also check out the anti virus system settings and see if it is set for auto update, if you haven't got the full anti virus program and just a few months free trial you are probably not covered by the full system security the top pakage gives you.

A little while ago my six year old grand daughter who was an avid
collector of the Hello Kitty cards googled 'little miss kitty' and
pulled down a porn site which was immediately cut off by her
distraught mummy. Needless to say VERY strict parental controls
are now in force on the computer and on computer use.

Right how to get shot of all your browser history cookies etc if you have XP not sure about Windows 7 as I don’t have it.
    Right so here goes.
    1) On Google search page in the top right hand corner of the page you will see the word tools
    2) Now left click on it then a descending list will come up.
    3) At the bottom should be a little box with a tick in it and the words internet options.
    4) Left click on that and up will pop the internet options home page with a little house on it with the words home page above it.
    5) Bellow that is a clock face with a green arrow going anticlockwise from the 12 to 9 o’clock position with the words browsing history above it.
    6) To the right of that are two boxes one market delete then another with settings written on it.
    7) Now left click on delete…
    8) Up will pop a box labelled delete browsing history.
    9) Now you will notice a descending set of 7 little boxes titled from top to bottom.
    Preserve favourite website data
    Temporary internet files
    Cookies
    History
    Form data
    Passwords
    Inprivate filtering data
    10) Now tick all except passwords, as you need these although it’s a good idea to always keep a written copy of these little beggers just in case you do tick the box.
    11) Now left click on delete and it will take a little while to go through all the deleting process.
    12) Now at the very bottom right hand corner of the bottom of the page are three boxes marked OK Cancel and apply.
    13) Click on OK and that’s it job done.

From your description, what happened was that a phoney car site sent you a load of pop-ups for a porn site. This is just one of the problems you can get online. Pop-ups are not always recognised as a virus and an antivirus program sometimes won't block them.

Being a new laptop, I presume that you are using Internet Explorer 8. The information on the pop-up blocker is for IE8, the latest version. IE8 is a web browser and works with operating systems such as Windows 7, Vista, XP, etc.

So, how to try to stop it happening again. Start up IE8 and click on the Tools menu. On the drop down menu it says 'Pop-up Blocker', click on this and another little 2 bar menu appears. The top bar should say, Turn off Pop-up Blocker, if it does then the Pop-up Blocker is on. That is what you want it to say.

If it says, 'Turn on Pop-up Blocker' then click on it, otherwise leave it alone.

The bottom bar on the Pop-up Blocker menu should say, 'Pop-up Blocker Settings'. Click on this. A box will open and near the bottom is a long box titled 'Blocking level'. Change this to High. Make sure that the little box by Show Information Bar is ticked. Then click on Close.

If a site tries to open a pop-up then a grey bar appears at the top of the webpage. This gives you a choice of whether to allow a pop-up or not. If in doubt click on block. Some shopping sites use pop-ups so you need to be able to allow them or you can't access the rest of that site.

Now, what to do if it happens again. You can't click on the white cross in the red box, (Exit Program), top right corner on the main IE8 window because the pop-ups become the active windows when they open. Also, multiple pop-ups open in order, say 123456, then you would have to shut them all down in reverse order, 654321 to get back to the main screen. If you have a screen full of little windows, then sorting out the order is difficult if not impossible. So, don't bother, see below.

The Alt/F4 key combination should work with any active program. Hold down the Alt key and press and release F4, (this key is at the top of the keyboard in the line, F1, F2, F3. etc.), then release Alt and it should close down the main IE8 program and all the pop-ups, rather than a forced shutdown using the power button. Wait for a short time before restarting IE8, as it takes time to finish shutting down.

Sorry for the rather long explanation, but this should help.
