Hi all just a quick question I have OA of both patella as far as I know I don't have RA, now should I have been referred to a Rheumatologist or is this just for people with RA?, I just wondered as it's never been offered to me and some on here with OA seem to have been?.

    Hi Mell

I have OA and have not been referred to a rheumi except 2 years ago when one consultant wished to check if I had RA. The blood test came back positive so I did visit a rheumy. He said as I had been told, all along, that I had OA so no need to see him again.

Hi Mel, That is a good question, I have OA and have not been refered to a rhemy, but I know people who have, it depends on your GP I suppose, my ain't very good.

    Thanks for this question Mellman

It's one I have been wondering about too! Have OA in hips and knees diagnosed by X rays but have never had blood tests or been refered to a Rheumatologist either. Mind you my GP not the most helpful and only recently sent me to a physio when I pestered for some help. I do take anti-inflams with the painkillers, but the physio hasn't mentioned blood tests or a Rheumy either? I'll be watching this one thank you.

hi Mell, I saw my gp in March 08 when i had lost most of the mobility in my neck & he refered me for physio. After, the physio discharged me back to my gp saying he couldnt help me any more.
My GP then refered me to a rhymy which i saw in aug 08.Ive had knees & thumb injected by rhymy, refered for more bloods & more physio.Plus a referal to OT.
My gp had already sent me for bloods tests & an xray for my neck.
I had been seeing my ryhmy until last dec when he discharged me into the care of my pain clinic consultant, with the referal to OT.
I have OA & i got diagnosed by the pain clinic in oct09 with Fibromyalgia, just to add to the fun  .
I am disappointment to see so my people that are struggling to get help.
I would say ask for a referal to a rhymy, if the GP say it wont help you, then there is the option to push for a referal to pain clinic they are very thorough & in my option very helpful.
Dont take no for an answer, i really hope you can get some help.

I have OA and when it got bad my GP referred me to an orthapedic consultant. After examination he discovered I had FAI and my hips are a mess so I had two hip ops, one arthoscopic and then the big open hip surgery.

My GP is now referring me to a Rheumatologist as I have lots of other problems and he thinks there is something else going on.

Hi I have oa and I see my GP mainly. Except when I had carpel tunnel, then the rheummy sent me to the plastic surgeon for my op. As I have had OA for some time, my GP said that she would send me to the rheummy if I wanted, but I know that they won't do anything and they can't treat oa, they just send you back to your GP, so I've left it for now. I am still seeing the plastic surgeon, who said he thought I should see a neurologist, but then did nothing about it! I have to see him again in a while, so will sort it out. It all seems so complicated. :? Love Sue
