Hi everyone
Happy New Year. I haven't been on the site for a few weeks. I had food poisoning just before Christmas. We celebrated Christmas on New Years day.
My operation is due to take place on 15 February. I have my pre op on 5 February and I just hope that my blood pressure behaves itself and there are no reasons why it doesn't go ahead.
If you've had a knee operation should I take nightdresses in or pyjamas?
Take care everyone. Will have a browse on the site later.

Good to hear from you Sharmaine, and glad that you have your op date.
When I had my TKR - almost three years ago now - I was encouraged to get dressed from day one. If you are too, I would suggest loose, wide legged trousers, or a long skirt, to make examinations easier.
I took nighties, - treated myself to some beauties! - again to make check ups easier. It`s just a personal choice really. Take all your favourite smellies, and your make up. It really gives you a lift. No jewellery, however, until after the op. I refused to take my wedding ring off, so they taped it up for me. You may want to give yours to
hubby to bring in.
You will probably be given all this information when you have your pre-op anyway. I was. Write down every last little thing that
concerns you, and ask then, no matter how trivial it may seem.
Anything else you want to know, please ask........Ange.0 -
Hi
Thanks for this advice - I only have one nightie so will have to buy a couple. I have lots of pyjamas! How long were you in? I don't possess a small suitcase so will have to look around for something to take things in.
Did you also have to stop taking your meds? I was supposed to see the specialist today but he's ill. I'll have to write down some questions for the pre-op.
Regards

Don`t buy nighties specially Sharmaine, PJ`s will be fine.
Yes, I was told at my pre-op to stop taking all meds, including any supplements that I took. Someone came along from the Hospital Pharmacy, and went through all my meds with me. They will do the same with you - don`t forget to tell them about anything that you take yourself i.e glucosomine.
Like you, I was worried about my BP, which was raised, and I was scared in case it delayed the op. It didn`t, even though it was a bit high on the day.
As I said, make your list before you have your pre -op, and ask away. Please let me know how everything goes........Ange.0 -
Hi Sharmaine
Great to hear you have an op date so at least you know where you are with that and can make preparations and so on.
If you are on anti inflams you will be asked at your pre op assessment to stop taking those as they can thin the blood. You can continue with painkillers.
I took in a few nighties but I also, from day one had the choice to dress or stay in nightwear and I chose the former. I wore tracky bottoms because y ou can show your knee at a seconds notice with them  and they are comfy and softer on the operation site too. Skirts or shorts can be worn too of course. Sensible slippers or shoes is a good idea, mule style slippers are not good ie when learning to walk again whilst in hospital. Pjs are ok if the legs are wide enough for you to be able to roll or pull them up over the op area on your leg which will for a short while be quite heavily protected. Yep, take in your makeup, fav perfume, shower stuff, all those sort of things that make you feel better in yourself.
I always have my wedding ring taped on during any op - I would not take mine off but no one has ever asked me to remove it.
You are generally in hospital 3 - 5 nights.
Best of luck, my lovely and any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Luv

Hey Sharmaine
Happy New Year! Sorry to hear about your food poisoning over Christmas, hope you are better now.
15th Feb, not long to go! I’ve not had a knee replacement but I did have a hip replacement early December. I was in hospital for 4 nights. I lived in jogger bottoms for the whole time as I’m not a nightie person but where whatever you feel most comfortable in! Joggers and nighties are good because they are loose fitting and comfortable. The good thing about joggers is you can also leave the hospital wearing them , but you may also need help getting them on depending on what restrictions you have, if you’re not allowed to bend in certain ways etc.
I really hope your blood pressure behaves itself so you can go ahead and have the op!
All the best.
Take care

Hi Sharmaine.
I'm sorry you had food poisoning.
i had a tkr 5 years ago i fond it best to wear a night gown as your knee will swell after the op.
are you having a epidural i did i had not had it before if you have it you come round quicker after opp. good luck.joan xxtake care

Hi Sharmaine
Sorry to hear about the food poisioning. Not nice! Hope you are recovered now.
i think it might be worth taking one nightie in. i like to get out of the theatre gown as quick as i possibly can. You might have a drain in your knee after the op until the next day or so. If you want to get out of the theatre gown before then a nightie would work but i'd imagine PJ trousers wouldn't. Once the drain is out (assuming you have one) either should be fine.
Also remember at first your knee will be swollen (and you may have a big dressing) so loose fitting trousers are good. I found that it took a little while to get back into some clothes - jeans especially, as some clothes rubbed on the scar at first. For hospital just try and take comfy clothes.
One other thing to bear in mind - avoid tight sleeves. You might have a canular (don't know how to spell sorry) for a couple of days so take clothes you can stretch over any needles you might have.
With the meds just do what you are told. I've just had a hip replacement and was not told to stop any meds. I take immuno suppressants (did suprise me i could carry on with these), anti TNF, anti inflams and blood pressure pills. Your surgeon probably has his/her own preferences so go with what they say.
Good luck with the op. I had my knees replaced - one in 2000 and the other in 2001 and they have been brilliant ever since. I hope it goes well for you!0 -

Totally agree there, re the jeans! I was most surprised how long it took before I could wear jeans again, comfortably, because of pressure of the material on the knee/scar.

Hello Sharmaine
Glad you have your date now but bet you are nervous, bless! When I had my hip done 3 months ago the hospital insisted on us wearing their nighties & using their towels as they have this strict hygiene policy. I didn't mind as meant my own nightey didn't get spoiled also they are easier to use with bedpans/ commodes etc. Loose fitting tracky bottoms are definitely the way to go for after! They have some great ones in Primani! Tight jeans are much too hard to pull on for a while. Also, I wish I'd taken in earmuffs & an eyemask!
I also would try & write down all the questions you have for the nurse at the pre-op.
Hello Elna - your op is also soon isn't it?
Wishing you both brave thoughts & am thinking of you
love Pennie X0 -
Hi Sharmaine,
I am glad they have given you a date and really hope it goes well for you. Try not to worry too much and well really wishing you good luck. Luv Cris x0 -
Hello, Good luck with the operation and I hope that your blood pressure behaves!
As for the Dress Code, if the doctor's good looking then I'd suggest someing sexy, but not too obvious. If hes too old to notice these things, a full foor length flanalette nightie, buttoned to the neck!!!
Sorry, seriously, I've not had your operation but, I have had tummy ops and been a carer, helping people to dress, and I would go for nighties that are quite easy to put on and maybe even a size bigger than normal. It makes life more comfortable for you. Good Luck, Lots of Good Wishes and Love Sue xxxx0 -
Dear Sue, Elna, Angel, Lynn, Delboy, Toni, Elizabeth, Caroline Pennie and rb1234
Many thanks for your best wishes and suggestions. My hubby took a half days holiday today and took me shopping. I came back with 5 nighties (I'll be returning one of them) which should be more than enough and a pair of slippers (not mules). I should have gone to M & S first where I found everything I needed. I had a look at my pyjamas some of which I've had for years and decided it was time to have a clear out..., except for the ones hubby bought me at Christmas and they are just too lovely to wear in hospital! I also bought a couple of pairs of joggers. I started off in the shopping centre on my crutches but after ten minutes OH had to get the wheelchair. I was gutted as I really thought I could cope without the wheelchair. I'll be glad when both knees are done. One now and one next year hopefully.
I'll ensure that I take clothes to meet all climatic conditions - good suggestion delboy - I can't abide being too cold.
Glad to hear that both your knee ops were ok rb1234. Pennie I hope you are ok after your hip operation. Elna great advice as usual thanks very much. When is your next operation? Thanks to you all for your kind words and great advice. I'll ensure that I write things down to ask at my pre op.
Lovely to hear from you all.
