Hullo peeps
Does anyone have any experience of being on methotrexate and wanting to start a family - do you know what the guidelines are for coming off it and that kind of thing?
Also how did people manage not taking the Mtx and being pregnant?
Thanks,
Lucia x

hi lucia
please forgive me if im doing this wrong but its my first post on the forum"hi".Anyway i saw your post and i have experience with this.I have been on methotrexate for about 8 years now both injections and tablets but in september 2008 our daughter was born.I had to plan my pregnacy and yes you have to have a min of 3 months clear but my consultant insited 6months was the best thing as it is a very dangerous drug to take when pregnant as it can harm the baby and trust me just dont read the reports if your easily freaked out like i was!.anyway as a rule they want you off all medication for your pregnacys an trust me it can be very painfull time.My arthritis calmed alot through my pregnacy as apparently it does for people but im still in a post delivery flare nearly 2 years on which again apparently does happen also.my consultant gave me a basic patient information leaflet on methotrexate and it does mention something about it in there also.
hope this helps!

i did it and now have a wonderful almost 2 year old toddler
I found it really hard emotionally and physically and it needs loads of consideration
I fully intended to take 6mths off MTX to be on the safe side but we started trying at 3mths as it was very difficult and i was starting to lose the will to live. In the end we conceived at 6mths so it all was ok, didn't stop me worrying throughout.
I would really recommend looking at a book that has just been written by a lady in australia - google - suzie edward may and you should find her website. Its a guide to parenting and arthritis, one of a kind, you usually only find arthritis books and baby books not together
I think it would help you prepare yourself
good luck ...its hard but it is worth it

I was told by my rheumy to wait 3 months from stopping. However after reading posts online etc I now feel this means 3 months should be done for cycles rather than counting months (but not 100% sure - as not received great help from specialists).
It seems to be thou that its a minimum of 3 months and some say 6 months.
Hopefully he is more informative than my rheumy... if he tells you if its months or cycles (or if you find out anything else informative) can you let me know please
Good luck x
